What is the most accurate 22 magnum?
« on: August 28, 2004, 03:10:31 PM »
I have a Ruger 22 mag. It is the heavy barrel stainless with lamanated stock. A friend of mine has one and is is real accurate. I can't get mine to shoot better than 2" to 3" groups at 100 yards. I shot several  other guns, 257 weath.,270wsm and 300 SAUM and shot good groups with them so I know it was not my shooting.  I have tried 5 different types of ammo and 2 different scopes. I hardly ever get rid of a gun but I am about ready to trade this one. I expect a good 22 mag. to shoot 1" to 1 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. Now can someone tell me what the most accurate 22 magnum they have shot is? I like the winchester leveraction but I am affraid it may not be any more accurate. I have heard very good things about the CZ bolt action rimfires. The Marlin bolt actions are suppose to shoot good but most of them have hard trigger pulls. I want to stay under $500. If anybody has any helpful info, please pass it on.

Here's what my Rem. 597M did at 60 yards.  I believe it shoots better than this, as i didn't have the best rest when i shot this group while sighting it in.  Also, i had not tried any other ammo in it at that time either.

And, no it doesn't jam, but it seems everyone elses does.

I had a Ruger K77/22-RMP which is the all-weather bolt action. Besides being incredibly UGLY, I could never get any acceptable accuracy from this rifle. Like yourself, I very seldom get rid of a rifle. But I did trade this one in for a used Savage/Anschutz 141M. A very happy day in my life. It definitely falls within your accuracy expectations.

These are the only .22 magnums I've ever fired, so I can't offer any first hand experience with others. The Winchester 9422M is a nice looking rifle, but being a lever action, I doubt the accuracy would be what you want.

I have three CZ 452's; all .22LR. Pretty accurate. Think the CZ would in .22mag would be a shooter as well.

I'm not a Marlin bolt action fan, but they do seem to have a good reputation. Supposedly they come from the factory with lousy triggers. But you could get a Marlin and replace the trigger with a Rifle Basix trigger (about $70.) and still be under your $500 limit.

Good Luck. And WELCOME to Graybeard Outdoors :D

Can't say what is the MOST accurate. I'm sure it varies greatly. If you had three identical guns of same make with consecutive serial numbers you'd likely find a good deal of difference in their ammo preferences and accuracy.

BUT my Marlin 882SS will easily keep five shots at 100 yards under an inch using the original Winchester 40 grain JHPs.

I get a lot of flack when I state Ruger guns are not all that accurate with exeptions of course. My Henry 22 mag Lever will shoot .5 moa at 50 yards with ammo it likes. Never shot at a 100 with it as I am out of the CCI FMJ it likes so well and only have some TNT's left which shoot ok at 50 but not as well as the FMJ does. Might have to get a box and do some longer range shooting with it but most of my shooting tends to be at 50 or less so I prefer to sight in at 50. yards. I never shot a Win 22 lever in 22 or mag so do not know how they shoot, but any Henry I have seen shoots very good groups. I would not trade my Henry Lever for anything it just plain shoots excellent! Price is a lot better than a Win also. I think so highly of it I have a Leupold M8 4x on it. The only expensive scope I own. Jim

.22 mag accuracy

I knew from experience they are not noted for accuracy. Ihave shot a few remingtons and they are accurate for an autoloader but seem spotty in quality control. I have seen two cz .22 magnums and they they would both shoot well within your expectations. My gunsmith who could have anything he wants shoots a cz. I have a custom bull barrel on my t/c but have not had a chance to check it out yet.

One thing I have noticed is that different manufactures are using the same bullet so you may have bought the same bullet in different loads. I had a Norico 22 mag it hated the tnt bullet (CCI and federal use it, maybe more) but it loved the federal 50gr and winchester supremes. Before I traded that gun, I used the Federal load exclusively it lost a little on trajectory but it gained it back by carring way more hitting power down range and at 100 I could  keep it to 1 to 1.5" with a 4X scope.

But I have to say that my 17v blows the doors of that 22mag accuracy wise. I could have it my way I'd still have both the 17 hmr for pd's and 22mag for semi-populated Coyotes.

Old Savage 65m
« Reply #7 on: August 30, 2004, 08:59:51 AM »
I just picked up a Savage 65m magnum bolt action because it was the only way I could get the K6 Weaver that was on it.

To my surprise, it shot within 3/4" at 50 yards from a crude rest--Win. Dynapoints.

My only problem is the trigger pull is substantial. And--unlike the marlin--i can't buy a new trigger assembly. Also, it has an odd hammer configuration that swings up from underneath the bolt--kinda like a 10/22- rather than the conventional bolt-action firing pin contained in the bolt itself.

Any suggestions for lightening the pull gladly accepted.

I suppose hunt up a gunsmith who will work on Savage's and have him lighten the trigger if he will. Depends on if that system allows you to.

Mad mike.....  I have a Marlin 882 and would like to let in on this secret too.  The gun shoots great with the trigger it has now but I could do that much better with a lighter trigger.  But to answer the topic the Marlin gets my vote too.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer with his buddies for a lifetime.

wvbowman04, i learnt how to lighten a marlin bolt action trigger from a guy on this forum. i have a 17v and hated the trigger, so i asked how to lighten one and got 1 reply that i tried. u take your stock off and there is is a screw that hold your trigger in.take that screw out and there is a spring that just slides in. take out the spring and set an ink pen spring beside it and take a pair of wire cutters and cut the ink pen spring to the same size and put back in. this should lighten it considerably.u can also take sand paper to the trigger where it connects.this will polish it and help slightly.let me know if if u try it and how u like it!!

I'm very satisfied with my Anschutz Mod. 62. Quarter size groups at 100 yds is plenty good enough for me.

At times a tune up will help the ruger rifle. Check to see if the barrel is freefloated. The barrel should not contact the wood forearm. Some  bolts are improved buy installing a washer.Glass bedding the action at times helps. Go to www.rimfirecentral.com and ask how to improve the rifle.

But why should you have to tune it up? TO me it should come good from the Company. Most all centerfire rifles you buy now and even most of the older ones shoot better than most can hold same with most 22's. After having 4 10/22's over the years and 6 handguns I have to say I am not a Ruger fan. Though I must admit the 22 Gov model I had shot well as the 10/22 T but even so I have a Mod 69 Romanian trainer that shoots better than any 10/22 I ever owned including the Target model. Why because it was built right and to shoot accurately the first time. To me Ruger's quality control is suspect. They make some great shooting guns and some you cannot hit a barn with. To me that needs fixing! Jim
