Author Topic: Does anyone use a 25-06 Rem? (Read 1248 times)

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the 25-06 Rem for hunting northern whitetails? Ranges will be out to a max of 90 yards or so. I am trying to select a new rifle and need some opinions on this cartridge. It will either be 25-06 Rem or a 280 Rem. Bolt action of course. It will be used in michigan upper peninsula. Their is also a chance the gun may get some use for black bears also.

THe 25/06 is a great deer round but is really at its best long range. The 280 is also a great deer round and probably a better choice for large whitetails and blackbear due to the better selection of big game bullets. Either one will probably fit the bill just fine.

If I had to choose between the 25'06 and the .280 and 100 yards was my max distance I would not choose either one....I would go with a 7mm08 in a Ruger M77 Compact or a Remington Model 7. The new Remington 700 CDL is chambered in 7mm08, and it's pretty too, but for short ranges you lose nothing going with a smaller rifle.

But if you just have to have a 25'06 or a .280, I would go with the .280.
At 100 yards the 25'06 will kill a Black Bear just as dead as a .300mag, but I have seen a mad wounded bear, and believe me, you will be glad to have that .284 bullet. Just my .02 :money:

Good question, 25-06 or 280 rem. I think either one would do the job with proper bullet placement, But with the bear in the issue i would echo 7mags
statement and go with the 280, Good luck and stay safe......Joe.......

Niether....90-100 yards max??? I can't see...(this is just my opinion) the need for either rifle....sounds like you'll be hunting thick stuff...my choice for this type hunting...a Marlin 45-70 stainless Guide Gun...loaded with Nosler 300 grain partitions...your choice on using a peep site or low power scope...if your planning on using it for shots over 150-200 yards...then by all means use either of yor original choices...you'll need a strong bullet for the 25-06 and there are plenty of them...the 280...I haven't shot any of the 7mm's so I'll bow to others here who can tell you about them.My Marlin will hold 1- 1-1/4" groups at 100 yards all day long with this bullet and will drop deer cleanly out to 200 yards with complete pass thru shots...big hole in...big hole out...makes tracking(if needed) easy...put bears into the mix in heavy cover... where shots are close and have to be quick...I want a gun that shoulders and points like my finger and gives me fast follow up shots...

I am about the biggest fan of the Quarter Bores going an would normally tell you to get the .25-06 for any deer hunting purpose. And although I have taken a couple of Black Bears with one of my .25-06s get the .280 Remington instead. A much better choice when you throw in a critter that can bite you back. Small groups and tight lines to you. Lawdog

I agree with 7magW, but going farther, I would look at the 308 and 358 winney's as well. 7-08 ,308, and 358 are all good, well beyond stated range should you need it. And wouldn't hesitate shooting a blackie with the 7-08, but would prefer the 358, leaving the 308 as a compromise.

I have both a 2506 and a .280 and have killed many deer at the ranges you describe either will perform fine.

In the 280 I have used Sierra 140 pro hunters, hornady 139 btsp,139 interloc flat base, 154 interloc flat base, 154 SST, 150 ballistic tip,160 Nolser partition, 160 barnes .

In the 25-06 I have used Speer 100 and 120 hotcores, 100 nosler partition, 100 hornady flat base, 100 and 115 barnes x and TSX. 100 Sierra Gameking BTSP.

All have resulted in dead deer, no runaways and no wounded to escape.

If it were me I would choose the caliber that made me happiest. If you want a great bullet in the 25-06 the 100 tsx or 115 tsx barnes would give great expansion and excellent penetration even at close range.

In the 280 take your pick any of those bullets will provide all the penatration you need to kill deer. I have recently began loading the 120 nosler ballistic tip in my 280 as it is very accurate and seems to be much tougher in design than the 140 and 150 ballistic tips. I am also going to give the 120 barnes x bt a try as it should penetrate as well as most standard 150/160's but shoot flatter and kick a little less.

I have looked over both the 280 and 25-06. Using my own loads of a Winchester CTI 115 gr Ballistic Tip and a nice charge of H1000, I took a 270# buck at 60 yards in the thick stuff, although the rifle was set up for a 300 yd shot. The buck ran about 70 yds. When field dressed the buck didn't have any lungs left. It was the best gun shot kill I have seen. I am sold on this cartridge and bullet combo for any range. I will be looking at the new Barnes Triple Shock myself this fall,just be certain on the best combination I can be shooting.
