Leupold QR ring height for encore
« on: September 11, 2004, 10:17:10 AM »
I bought a Leupold Quick release base for my T/C encore with a set of med rings off eBay.  I am trying to mount my nikon 4x40 scope but  I wanted to still use my open sights. ( sometimes I hunt in some thick stuff), also if I were to bump my scope hard(happened before)  I still wanted my open sights to be available to me. I've had a set of weaver "see through" sights and don't care for them...feel the Leupold is a higher quality mounting system. Anyway, the medium rings will not clear the open sight. I could order a set of super high rings and they would clear the sight. Does anyone think this would be a problem, or should i just eliminate the open sight completely? any draw-backs to using the superhigh rings(w/o the open sights, I could mount the scope with low rings). Any advice would be helpfull. Thanks!

I used a set Leupold QR High rings on my Encore--these are the standard style rings--not the Warne type--with a 3-10X42 Sightron and a 3-9X40 Weaver.  The Weaver easily cleared the open sight, and the Sightron just barely made it--but the important thing is that they both fit.

The super high rings should work for you, but you will need to have a higher cheek weld on the stock which may or may not be comfortable for you.  I'm still relatively comfortable with my high rings.

I wouldn't reccomend attempting to mount a scope with low rings on an Encore unless the rear of the scope won't overhang the hammer.  It can be a bit difficult to get a gloved finger between the scope and hammer if the scope is mounted too low.

Hello Stonewall,

This isn't to helpful concerning your Leo's, but I use a weaver base with Warne Maxium Medium Height quick detach rings.  It is super solid.  I'm using this setup with the same scope, a 4x40 Nikon Monarch and the clearance is perfect.  The rings come off easily and you can use the fiber optic iron sights with no problem while leaveing the base on.  I'm really impressed with the Warne Maxiums.  I've got another pair I use for a 30mm scope in medium height and I really like them (42 objective clears as well).  They are heavy when you compare them to other rings however if that is an issue.

The medium height works fine for me with thin gloves, but I'd go with a high if you plan on using thick gloves.  With the mediums I can get a good weld to keep me steady and the scope is closer to the barrel.

Hope this helps,
JCM
