But me I'd buy a Remington 700 cuz that's what I buy when I buy rifles.

Nothing specific yet, but elk, bison and African plains game are in my cloud of ambitions. I handled the iron-sighted Winchester model 70 safari in 375 and it was love at first sight. The weight isn't bad for me. I figure that, loaded, it's only about a pound heavier than my 270. If there's something comparable with iron sights, the heavier weight, and in stainless/synthetic I'd be interested in it.

(Yes, I know a 300 or 375 will serve for these applications, but the choice of 375 in a heavier rifle is a matter of taste in this case.)

Actually, GB, I don't think Remington offers a 375 H&H now. And of the rifles it does sell, they tend to be of the 7.5 pound variety without sights. They do have one chambered for 375 ultra mag, and I read that remington's custom shop will do 375s but as lighter rifles.

If you are looking for a factory rifle I would go with Ruger or Sako or for the best value for your dollar CZ 550 Mag which comes with a set trigger, nice feature! As for the Remingtons, poor stock design, too light, and shoddy quality control these days pluss push feed and poor wood. Am I predjuidice? Mabe, but I build custom rifles for a living and work on guns to fill in and the Rem 700 is not where I would look! If you want to talk call me at 207-938-3595

Simple, get a Ruger M77 Magnum. Only thing you have to do to it is install a Timney adjustable trigger(you can do this yourself and it won't break you either) and sight her in. The Ruger ring system is about the best going. You can remove your scope and remount it without changing POI. And you're right about Remington not chambering for the .375 H&H. They also dropped the .338 Win. Mag. from their line in an effort to boost sagging sales of their RUM line. Lawdog

Remington offers all of the following thru the Custom Shop chambered to the .375 H&H. Weights vary.

Model 700 ABG 9 1/2 lbs.
Model 700 APR 7 3/4 lbs.
Model 700 AWR 6 3/4 lbs.
Model 700 Safari Approximately 9 lbs.
Model 700 Custom "C" Grade 7 1/2 lbs.
Model 700 Custom KS Mountain Rifle 6 lbs. 12oz.

Me thinks perhaps they no longer make the .375 H&H in the standard line. At least I didn't find one. Kinda amazed me but I didn't see one.

And you won't see any. Remington dropped the .338 Win. Mag. & the .375 H&H to try to boost lagging sales of their .338 & .375 RUM's. They also dropped the .416 Remington from their standard line too. Both the .338 Winchester and the .375 H&H were outselling the RUM's by a margin of 5(+/-) to 1. I don't see why they just didn't drop the .338 & .375 RUM's and get it over with. If Remington keeps going the biggest big bore they will have will be the old .350 Remington Magnum. Lawdog

You simply cannot take over the business the 45 plus year old 338 win mag has or the 100 plus year old 375HH these idiots at Remington deserve to lose the business. What was the point of the RUM anyhow? What did it do different then the other magnums?

Be realistic and put the R&D into bullet developement not new cartridges we already have a huge amount of cartridges, more then any one could possibly ever use!

What is needed is a non-fouling bullet that holds together at point blank and expands at 350 yards. Sure we have some near perfect now but there could be much better then what we have.

What sort of improvement was gained over the 375HH with the 375RUM? what a waste of time that was. Think for just a minute where that cartrige will be used and what the stock piles of existing 375HH ammo must be. Its on every shelf of every back country sote in AK or Africa.

Now where you gonna find 375 or 338 RUM ammo?

JJ, I'm new to this forum.

You mentioned the F (fouling) word :-). Do hunters clean their rifles while on safari in Africa? Does a hunter need to bring cleaning equipment/supplies or could you provide them at your lodge?

You might run a bore snake through once a day but nobody actually scrubs a barrel during a safari. If you have that kind of fouling you should find better bullets to use that match your guns barrel a bit better.

Cleaning a barrel spotless would require fouling shots to prepare for actual hunting again. Thats just not practical to do every day. Any decent hunting rifle with good loads and bullets should be able to fire off several dozen shots without fouling. If you cannot do this they you need to have your barrel lapped or shoot another type of bullet.

My 375HH fouls horrible with "X" bullets so I don't use them at all. My 458 Lott shoots hundreds without fouling so I use them 100% of the time. Gotta find the match between bullet and gun long before you decide to go on an extended hunt for many animals.

I recently acquired a Winchester mod 70 Safari Express in .375 HH, left handed no less. I would not trade it for the world. It may be a touch lighter than what you are looking for, but the recoil really isn't very bad. I've shot .300 Win mags that beat me up way worse. Plus having a pound or two less to carry can make a big difference after a long track. Recoil is the only reason I can think of for wanting a heavier rifle, and if this is really a problem for you, maybe a quality mercury reducer would do the trick better than a heavier gun.
My father has his .375 in the Ruger m77 and loves it. I don't know about either the Ruger or Win in stainless/synthetic. Since I was looking for a lefty I took the first (read only) quality weapon I could find. Thank goodness Winchester finally put out the m70 in lefty!!! I was waiting for years.
