Indoor Silhouette Range
« on: September 12, 2004, 06:28:53 PM »
All,

Has anyone every set up a scaled down indoor (50ft) match, shooting reactive silhouettes, instead of paper?

I know that they have airgun silhouettes, that could be done in this distance.  My goal would be able to shoot the .22's indoors, I just don't know if it is feasible.  In the past we have shot paper silhouettes, and have enjoyed it, however, I think it would be more of a draw if we could shoot reactive targets during the winter months.

The thoughts that come to mind that would hinder such a match would be a strong enough material for the targets,  ricochets in an indoor range, and approval for sanctioned matches.

This might be a pipe dream,  but I was hoping that someone might have an idea or knowledge of such a match.

Thanks

In addition to all that you've already considered, I would think that lead dust would be a potential problem.

I don't know -- but I'd guess -- that a bullet impacting the perpendicular surface of a target hard/tough/heavy enough to withstand multiple hits at 50' would shatter more than the same bullet hitting a typical backstop/bullet trap at an angle and deflecting into some sort of catchment?

There used to be frangible bullets for gallery shooting. Don't know if they're still available...

Hi Chunter
We shoot silhouette's indoors all winter at 25 yds, Pistol and Rifle. .22 only. We use IHMSA size animals scaled down. Chicken is full size. Great fun and a very good introduction to silhouette shooting. We give pins for Pistol and Rifle for the first time you shoot 10 in a row of a animal, and a 40 pin for shooting all of them in a single match. We have people shooting open and scope. Kids get to bench rest when they first start.
We have made rails and the animals stand up about 2'6" above the ground. We also shoot shot of the week. An Air pistol Turkey at 25yds...

Slowstdy,

Do you have pictures of your setup? What is the scale of the targets you are using? More information please....

Thanks

hello chunter,
although i do not want you to quit looking for other alternatives, i think that it might be a waste of time and money to make a setup to shoot indoor silhouette at 50 feet, if you had aviable the whole 50 yards that would be a different story, I know that paper punching is not as fun as steel knocking, but for 20 yards it should do and you dont have to worry about possible rikochets etc.
neverthless good luck on whatever works for you!

Actually air gun rifle needs 45 yards.  quote="chunter"]All,

Akihmsa, Read slwstdy's reply above! We have been  running this match for 12+ years at our club for 8 plus months out of each year 1 night a week. The targets are down sized IHMSA targets..at 25 yds.  The problem for smallbore rifle shooters is that these targets are way to big and not good to practice on.  But as an introductory match to new shooters it is great and for IHMSA pistol shooters it is good practice during the off season. But IHMSA seems to be an almost dead issue so that doesn't much matter any more.    There has never been an injury at this match..all  competitors are required to where hearing and eye protection.

Hi y'all
If we can keep this thread going for another 3 weeks, I will take picturs at the first night, and figure out how to post them. Sizes are IHMSA size/ distance, devided by 25. ie Rams are at 100yds, we shoot at 25yds so rams are 1/4 scale. Turkeys are 1/2 scale, pigs are 3/4 scale and  chicken's are same size.
Hey Hrnetx60, It's SLOWSTDY. U Run out of O's again, LOL, me I run out of H's all the time.......

I agree with Paul + burning gunpowder indoors creates a ventilation problem. Maybe ventilation isn't a big deal if its one person shooting 20rds, but a couple of people shooting 100 rds creates air quality problems.

Hi Hornet Bill

Sounds good too me, whatever gets folks shooting is great!  FYI I dropped my IHMSA membership this year after they trash canned all the Alaska ballots cause we simply couldn't get them in on time.  Received the IHMSA News that the ballot was in way too late to get it back in time to be counted.  When the board relized the error they stood by it.   That isn't a way to run a general membership vote, with no notice, and not enough time for a member to even vote if he wished to.  In Alaska it is common to get our paper 10 days after most others get theirs.

Haven't missed a beat though and we are still having fun with the steel critters here in the great land, currently in a non sanctioned match but the fun is the same.
