I recieved my 1885 Winchester High Wall Limited Edition in 45/70
yesterday and it is a beauty. I wanted one as soon as I found out
Winchester was doing them this year. I will post some pics as soon as
I get my camera back from my uncle.

WOW Kevin! That's a beauty! Looks like they really did it correctly on that gun! I've not been a fan of the varous High Wall reproductions I've seen, but your's looks much more like the guns of the early 1900's. Great looking wood, and nicely blued too.
Is the metal to wood fit good? The barrel looks similar to a #1 or #2 weight original; is it pretty lightweight? Do they offer them in an octagon barrel, or heavier round barrel?
 Once again, great gun!

Thanks Marlinman I will try to get some better pics of it soon.
I agree with you it looks much more peroid than most of the
highwall repro's that have been done.
It is a light weight octagon barrel, it balances out beatifully.
It comes with the tang sight and a buckhorn rear sight and bead front
sight, when I bought it they had put the Globe sight on but I have
the origonal sights also. It is drilled and tapped if a peson was so
inclined that they wanted to mount a scope on it.
The wood to metal fit is pretty darn good, I am thinking very
seriously about refinishing it with Velvet Oil thou. I think it would
look 10 times better that way.
The only things I don't really care for are the sling swivels mounts
and how large the forearm is but I do really loves this gun.

Thanks for clarifying that Kevin. I couldn't tell for sure if it was round or octagon. I have an original 1885 with a #1 full octagon barrel, and it looks quite light like your's. I'd guess if they numbered them today, your's would be a #1. I also have one in a #4 full octagon, and although it's heavier than heck, they sure look right. The #4 would be lighter if it was in .45-70, instead of .22 cal.
With what's on the market today, I sure wouldn't complain much about the forearm and the finnish. It's still a great gun!

KSR:
I just purchased a .45-70, and a .38-55 in the Limited Series also. I really like these rifles.

I have also heard, but can't confirm, that Winchester will be making this rifle in .40-65 too. Have you, or has anybody else, heard that?

Howdy,
Were you able to purchase directly from a dealer or are the rifles only being marketed through Davidsons? I would love one in 38/55 or 40/65. I am hoping Winchester is supplying to dealers, so I might get one from Canadian dealer.

Marty:
I purchased the rifles through a local dealer.

I think these rifles are "Limited Edition" rifles just for Davidson. I have heard, from reliable sources, that there are only 125 of each being made this year.

All of the 45-70 High walls were allocated firearms. Yesterday, Davison's website said they had 53 each, 38-55's left.

Interestingly, Davisson's is also having a 45-90 BPCR, for Black Powder only, released soon. Now, the question is, what makes the rifle Black Powder only?

With the popularity of the 40-65 cartridge, it would seem reasonable that somebody would get smart in Winchesters organization.

I was talking to Winchester's customer service yesterday, and They said that if they received enough requests from the shooting public, that they would probably release a High Wall in 40-65, and in 32-40 also.

Sooo, it would seem like if we want one enough, the thing to do is flood Winchester with calls.

Sure is nice looking rifle.  After a bit of breaking in, let us know how it shoots.  Does it have a Jap barrel or a badger like some of the Brownings?

I don't have a gun dealer nearby and I was wondering what the cost of one of those?  I would like one in 38-55, but don't know if I could afford it.  I'd like some idea of cost before heading to a dealer (80 miles, round trip).

Dozer:
Davidson's suggested list price is $1395.00, and then you pay tax and license. My dealer cut me a $100.00 break on each rifle.

I have seen some of the Winchester 1885 single shots, non-limited edition type, around here for the same thing.

I just bought a Low-Wall, high grade, in 22LR that cost almost as much. Gold inlays and engraving make a sucker out of me every once in a while.

I bought a Low-Wall in 45 Colt that was priced the same.

So, I guess that is what the freight on each item is, all over.

I think I would have bought the 45-70, and the 38-55, regardless of the price, because of their quality and the nostalgia attached to the rifles. And, I want BPCR's for silhouette.

I seem to be reading challenged this evening.

To answer your questions, as far as I know all of the Winchesters have the Winchester/Miroku barrel on them.

If my two rifles shoot, as good as a friend of mines rifles shoot, I am going to be real happy. Out of the box, just sighting in with the Tang Sight, his rifles, both of them, were shooting under 1 1/2 inches with factory ammo. If I had not of seen it, I might have not believed it. But, I did witness it.

What part of the Northwest do you live in? I grew up in  Omak, WA. Many years ago! I hope to be back in about six months.

Lurker,
Thanks for the information, Bill. Definitely a good looking rifle.
I think you are right, shooters who want those high walls in other cal.s need to make it known to Winchester.  I intend to call them, and also see who they will export through; hopefully there is an avenue avaliable. Nice to see them recognizing our interests. My Dad has a .22 High Grade Low Wall; it is nice; I have a regular grade; they make a good pair.
Good to see the Miroku barrels shoot well. Will watch the thread to see what else develops out of this.
