Bounty Hunter II spare/custom barrels?
« on: September 13, 2004, 08:11:52 AM »
I recently managed to get a EAA Bounty Hunter II external hammer shot gun in 12 gage and love it except for the lack of longer barrels.  The short barrels are great for competition and such, but for birds I wish they made a set of 26-28" barrels.  They make a set of inserts for 45-70, and I may get a set of them, but would perfere a seperate barrel and site set-up for them.  I would like to get/buy/build a set of 12 gage barrels 26-28", and a set of 20"+ barrels in 45-70.

Does anybody know of a set of barrels that would fit or could be easily modified to fit?  How hard would it be to start from scratch?  I have a metal lathe and milling machine, gas forge, needle tip oxy/propane torch, and grinders and files and ect.

Thanks,

Will

As usual the most difficult part would be regulating the barrels to get the point of impacts together.  There are some dovetail devices that allow the tubes to be moved until the patterns overlap correctly..they are not too difficult to devise.  Creating a monoblock to fit the action and inserting the barrel blanks wouldn't be too hard although the monoblock requires precision drilling and reaming to get the barrel mounting holes correctly aligned.  The 45-70 barrels would work the same way but would be more difficult as getting 2 bullets to impact together is much more difficult than getting to shot patterns into the same neighborhood.  Concentional doubles have the barrels and the ribs soldered together.  That is most truly a pain..  I would opt for the option chosen by Ruger.  I believe they use blocks welded to the barrels and simply screw the ribs to these mounting blocks.  The same blocks could well be used to help in the alignment of the barrels..much as barrel tuners are used to tune groups from 22 rimfire rifles.  Also as always we must consider the strength on the action when dealing with the 45-70..

Thanks Gunnut, bout what I figured(or was afraid of!)  I believe I could do the machine work and even the solder work, but I was realy hoping someone had a source of barrel asmebles that all I would have to do is put the choke tubes in and stick it on the action.  I'm straped for time, still havent' gotten around to re-linning the bore of a 51' navy conversion I'm working on so that I can use solid bullets instead of hollow base.

Maybe get some time when I finish my new shop, will have a lot of re-search to do before starting though.
