to answer this you need the time life series of books on world war 2. on page 94 of "The Soviet Juggernaut" we see 4 female partisans entering minsk in july of '44. the one standing second from the left is carrying a very odd looking bolt action rifle which i can't identify or find in any reference books. it looks like it could be a regular military action in a home made stock. any ideas guys?

hmm maybe CGN is like some forums on here and you have to a member. oh well, the rifle in question was a french M1916 berthier carbine. to bad you can't get in you could see just how ugly it is! this proves once and for all that the french cannot build a good looking gun! ( and i think an SVT is a thing of beauty, when i reality theys ugly!)

Y'know, for someone who calls themselves kevin.303 that's a bit rich. Ugly indeed!!! The SMLE was never a pretty rifle either!  :wink:
But that aside, to each his own. In my opinion most of the current auto & semi auto service rifles are ugly as sin. That doesn't necessarily make the uncomfortable to use. Perhaps that carbine was light and comfortable for the woman, a pretty important factor for a lot of female shooters.
By the way, which cartridge did the Berthier use? Has anyone actually tried one on a range?

The Berthier used the 8mm Lebel cartridge, which was the first smokeless military round.  It was rimmed and used by the French in the First World War. If memory serves, the rifles had 3 round magazines. The round was loaded by American companies at least till WWII.  It is in the .30-40 Krag class.

No doubt the Berthier\Lebel was an ugly weapon,
but they were quite accurate with their 8mm cartridges.
The long rifles were not suited to the Trench warfare of WWI.

I had a 1916 Berthier long barrel and i thought it looked ok for its time I sold it lastyear.  But my SVT-40 looks awesome and even my FRENCH MAS 49/56 Commando Rifles look good too and its one hell of a shooter too probably the best reliable battle rifle ever made too. I don't think any of these are ugly at all.        :D                           BigBill

The women in Russia were snipers armed with 91/30 mosin's and SVT-40 Tokarev's too they were on the history channel "women snipers" and they did their job too.

Actually I said it wasn't a pretty rifle......and it isn't. But yeah, it's a performer and a stayer. I'd still buy a Martini Enfield .303 over an SMLE though.

Out of interest has anyone got a pic of the SVT-40?

i often seem to misquote people, and what with you living down under i can't be bothered to go that far to shoot you in the arm! :)

i have to admit, i also like the series of MAS rifles built starting in the 30's. they look good in a rugged utilitaran sort if way. it must be the british blood in my heritage that makes me defernd the Lee so adamantly!:-D
