30-30 AI in TC Carbine
« on: September 13, 2004, 11:24:17 AM »
Read the past post on this cartidge and saw no data on it in 23" bbls.  Is it safe to assume the standard 25 ft/sec increase in velocity per inch of extra bbl with this round?  From what I read (PO Ackley, SD Hunters info as well as others), it should make a great carbine round for hunting.  Looking for actual info (somtimes the actual velocities don't come close to the published ones).  Many Thanks.  bg

Majbg,

I have the 30-30AI in a 24" custom shop barrel and really like it. The velocities that I get run as follows:

125-135g. bullets can easily be pushed 2,800-2,900 fps.
150g. bullets can easily be launched at 2,700-2,800 fps.

I haven't tried any heavier bullets, since I use it for deer. The best group fired to date is the Nosler 125g Ballistic Tip which crowded 3 shots into .75" at 200 yds.

I don't think any larger .308 cartridge is neccessary for most deer. Case stretching has been practically non-existant. I picked up Lee's 30-30AI dies and have been happy with those.

I am very satisfied with it!

I've trimmed way back on my Contender barrels and currently own just 3 16" carbine barrels and 3 pistol length barrels, but a 23" stainless 30/30AI is in my mind.  It's close to 308 Win ballistics would make it suitable for anything I'm ever liable to hunt in my lifetime.

Buffalo, Who makes your barrel?  I'm looking at a TC 30-30 23" and having it reamed out to 30AI by a friend?  Thanks for the reply.  bill

Majbg,

My barrel is a T/C Fox Ridge custom bull-barrel. So far, it seems to be quite accurate and I am pleased.

You're welcome and I hope it goes well for you!
