Winchester Mod. 88 Value?
« on: September 13, 2004, 09:17:14 AM »
I am thinking of selling my Winchester 88 in .308 (1956 manufacture) and need to decide on a fair price for it.

I bought it used for $250 almost 20 years ago.  The stock had been cut down, so I scabbed on a couple of pieces of ash with a recoil pad.  Since I live in a rain forest, I had WF Birdsong put the "Black-T" finish on it which very effectively waterproofed it.  It has a Williams Foolproof peep rear and Lyman 17A globe front sights.  I also have a Redfield Tracker 2-7x scope with mounts and base for it, a second magazine and a Boyd's laminated stock which I never got around to fitting.  Despite the sluggish 88 trigger, I get 1" - 1.5" groups at 100 yards, sometimes better.  It is definitely a hunting rifle, not a collector.

So what would "those that know" suggest I should ask for it?

Thanks for any input!

Unaltered 88's of pre-64 vintage sell for around $600 in my neck of the woods, depending on condition.  Nice ones can get a bit more, but the demand isn't too high around here.  With the extras that you mention (extra stock, scope, etc.), you might be able to get a price in that ballpark, despite the alteratations.  If you asked a little less, and just kept your scope, it would be a first-class project gun for somebody to turn into a dream rifle (maybe a .358, set in that laminated stock).
