seeking info
« on: September 02, 2004, 02:06:03 PM »
Hi,I just stumbled on to this forum a few days ago and had to join. I have an 1873 Trapdoor carbine made by H&R that I love to shoot but because its a little rare,I would like to get the buffalo model  and was wondering what the thoughts are on them. Ideally I would like to use it for target, plinking and deer hunting. But I live in a shotgun only deer season  state and would need to get a 12 slug barrel fitted to it also. Does anyone know if they can fit a 12ga slug barrel on this model? Thanks. This is a great site with lots of info

Yes Dutch, H&R can fit a 12 gauge barrel and more to the Buff Classic. You should call them with your serial number when you get the gun to get a complete list of barrels they will fit but they will add a 12 Gauge for sure (or a 20 smooth or rifled for slugs.. check out the many threads here about the virtues of 12 gauge vs 20 gauge slugs, and smooth vs rifled and lightweight barrels vs heavy rifled barrels, enough to keep your head spinning for a long time....<><....

And welcome aboard!! :D   I see this is post #1 for you, a milestone and the first post of many I hope....

Dutch, they can fit the 12 gauge Tracker barrel to it, but that barrel is not suitable for scoping. If you like iron sights, that's OK, but it'll be a serious kicker.

They can fit the 20 gauge Ultra barrel that is set up for a scope.  Both barrels are rifled.

Dutch, DJ is very learned and is correct regarding H&R1871 recommending against scoping (drilling and tapping to mount a scope rail) the standard 12 gauge barrels. However some of us here have found competent gunsmiths who will do the work for us, and believe me, they work out sweet as an accurate carry gun with a scope or red dot and my favorite, 2 3/4" Brenneke 1 oz. slugs. Relatively light recoil and puts the slugs into one ragged hole at 50 yards when I do my part!!!. I also live in a shotgun only state but hunt quite a bit in Maine. This gun is going to get used a bunch up there also, even if I can use rifles. It's light, accurate, and packs a punch. There is another thread here on the shotgun board about scoping the 12 gauge. What state are you in? You just may be close to where the work is done....<><....

H&R Buffalo Classic

Hi and thanks so much for all the replies. I have news that after searching long and hard, I found a buffalo classic. It should be sent within a week or two. I live in Rhode Island and only am an hour or so from the factory they are made at in Ma.,but I could only find one 3/4's of the way across the country!
I already have some loads from shooting my trapdoor carbine made by H&R in the 1970's but any good luck with ammo would be greatly accepted.
After reading some of the posts about shotgun barrels,I am thinking of a 20ga slug barrel, but undecided which one. A regular barrel with a mod. choke would make this gun have a few more uses,so one of them might be in the future too.
Thanks again for all the advise and this is a really helpful forum
