barrel length
« on: September 19, 2004, 12:37:50 PM »
I was looking, at first, for a ruger mini-30 as an atv and short range deer rifle, and decided against it.  I have decided that the marlin 336 in 30-30 is a much better choice for the task.  Now the next step is to figure if I want the 20" of the 336c or the 16.5" barrel of the 336y spikehorn.  Length of pull is no issue to me, since I can just put a 1" pad to make up the difference.  I like the idea of the shorter barrel better, but do not know how it will measure up to the full size.  Can anyone offer some insight on this?  Am I giving up too much ballistically by going with the shorter barrel?
Thanks in advance,
Michael

KYsingleshot,
It depends on the type of shooting you are going to be doing, I don't think it would make that much difference in most cases. I've got a 336 that i put another barrel on thats cut to trapper lenth and it does fine for me.
I carry it in the truck every where i go and have shot many coyotes with it. You will find that its a lot easyer to get around in the brush than the longer barreled gun. I guess its a matter of opinion which one you like.
Have a good day..........Joe..........
