A great choice for the lady!; Mdl 64's have a rich history. I'll try to dig up an article or two from the late Francis Sell of Oregon; he did his elk hunting with a Model 64. Go with the Federal Premium 170gr Nosler Partition® Bullet. If she does her part & puts it in the 'boiler room'; it will do the job on an elk. I don't know where you are in Wa State but I can help you with information about GMU 501 (Lincoln). It's open for EITHER SEX (3pt Bull or Cow) for the General Rifle Season.

Send me a PM & I'll fill you in about Lincoln & the rifle!

I second what Dawei, said,  the 30-30 will put an elk down (My model 94
has taken 2)   keep shots 100 yards or less and If she does her job
a 170 bullet will do the rest.  I hunt the Olympic Penn area.   Just got
back from an elk capture in the area,   We tagged,  about  5 good
bulls,  got  3-4 spikes,  and  tagged  5-6 cows.   I don't know what
gmu you'll be hunting..... but If your on the Olympic Penn,  make sure
you take a bear tag.   We seen quite a few bears the past 4 days.  One
...a Sow with two cows tried to  get onto a cow we darted.   Helo pilot
had to chase off the bears !!
30-30....45/70...... does anything else matter?

Plenty of Lewis County, WA elk fell to my great-grandfather's 30-30, loaded with 170 grain bullets.  As far as I know, that rifle has never been fed anything else, and it's dropped every animal but one for good.  The one exception was hit in an antler tine, and it nearly gored the hunter when it suddenly regained consciousness while being tagged.  The fact that I'm posting this proves that my dad survived the encounter, but shot placement is key, regardless of cartridge.

Like many of us here I personally would not hesitate to take elk with a 30/30.
However you always hear that this is done in the hands of experts and not beginners. Do not allow her to shoot at over about 50 yards. She`ll be a happy camper with a well placed shot. POW
