Which 280 Rem. ammo to use ???
« on: January 24, 2005, 03:14:04 PM »
My father and I are thinking about going on a black bear hunting in the near future, probably in Quebec, Canada. I have a few rifles to choose from. One is a 444 Marlin. We'll definitely be bring that one. I also want to bring my 280 Rem. right now this rifles set up for deer hunting. I use factory ammo. For deer I use Remington 140 gr. Pointed Soft Point Core-Lokt (going to try Hornady's 139 gr. SST Light Mag.). I want to use something a little heavier for bear. I guess the bear range from 200 to 600 pounds in the area were going to go. I understand that the chances of seeing a 400 to 600 pound black bear are slim to none. I would rather be prepared!

I was looking at Remington's 165 gr. Soft Point Core-Lokt ammo. Also Federal's 150 gr. Nosler Partition and 160 gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claw ammo. Winchester's 140 gr. Failsafe seems a little light and I'd rather use something heavier that will penetrate deeper. What do you guys/gals think ? :?:

For max penetration I would use the 160 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw ammo, but I don't think max penetration is needed.

NY Hunter use the 165 core lokts. They would be my pick.  The federals 150 nosler part. or the trophy bonded are a little over kill. The remington's would be better up close with the soft point. Just my thoughts. :D  :D

Just about the time you figure that you will not see a bear in the 400 - 600 lb. weight class one walks into your lap.  Any time you hunt something that can/will bite back you should have the best bullet in your rifle that you can get.  Go with a top premium bullet that your rifle shoots well.  Leave the Core-Lokts for non-dangerous game.  Lawdog

Before premium bullets became available in factory loads core lokts seemed to work pretty well.

Before what we call premium bullets existed Remington core-locks were premium. In my opinion they still are. Regards, Byron

Federal now loads a 160 Nosler Accu-bond in the .280 Remington.  I have not tried it but this should be an excellent big game load for the .280 for anything short of the large bruins.
