Powder for .30-06 and 8x57
« on: September 23, 2004, 07:41:52 AM »
This is the flip side question to my last one. What I want is a powder to load 180 gr 30-06 and 170-200 gr 8x57 to their full potential. Currently I'm using IMR 4064 in the 30-06 for 150 and 165 gr bullets. I not loading the 8x57 yet. Both these rounds are going to be used for whitetail and hog hunting. Thanks for the help!

IMR-4064 From 37.5 grains to 50.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

I use IMR 4064 with the 165's in both of my 30-06's.

For the 180's I switch to IMR 4350.

I've tried other powders but always seem to come back to these two.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

IMR 4064 is the best powder I have found for the 8x57. I use the Hornady 170g RN travelling at 2630 fps for deer hunting. I have also worked up a sub 1" load using the Hornady 195g psp and 4064.

I would reccomend Varget. It works great in the 06, but i have not tried it with 180 grain bullets. Also in the Nosler #5 manuel Varget gets top velocity in the 8x57.

I've been shooting H4895 in my M48 with 49gr under a 220gr sierra game king very good accuarcy and 2500fps serious woods hammer in my opinon. 8)  I like BL-C2 for the lighter bullets and I'm getting 2900fps + outta them 170 hornaday RN interlocks both of this will shoot inside of 2" off hand with factory mauser sights. You just gotta aim about 18" low. Thats why the scout scope is on order :D

I like AA2520 for everything up to 200 grains in both cartridges. For a 220 grain load in the 8X57, I use AA2700.
