Some questions from a curious person.
« on: December 17, 2004, 02:03:24 AM »
Hello folks, long time GBO user, first time on the Traditional archery forum page.  Ive been getting pretty heavy into archery lately.  Ive got an old Pearson compund iIve been practicing with and next month my new Reflex Grizzly compund should be in.  But Ive been thinking of picking me up a stick bow to have some fun and shoot some targets with.  I had planned on putting this off for a while, but I found this site on another forum that deals strictly in stick bow shooting.  There they hae bows from a company called AIM.  Specifically Im looking at 2 bows:  The Victory recurve (62" string with 34 # pull,) and the Ranger recurve (52" string with choice of 22# or 26# and 58" string at 26#.)  What do you guys think of these bows as starting bows (the Victory is $95 and the Ranger $85)?  Im not looking to hunt with them.  Thats what I got the Grizzly for.  And if I did decide some day along the line to use a recurve deerhunting I would purchse a better suited bow.  Like I said, this is strictly for fun right now.  So would these bows fit the bill?  Ill tell ya guys something that you might get a laugh out of.  My father used to have an old Bear recurve he shot as a youngster.  Tha bow sat in our basement for years collecting dust.  It was a nice bow that was in pristine condition, it just didnt have the string anymore.  Well here I am, all set and ready to start my foray into the world of archery.  I figgure that bow would at least be a start, right?  So I go lookin for it but cant find it nowheres.  So I ask my mom where she last put it.  She tells me the bad news that she cant remember if she sold it or gave it away after her last cleaning spree   .  Oh well, not much I could do about it.
Anyways, thanks.

There are alot of great deals on used bows out there. I would think that for the money that you are looking to spend, you should be able to pick up a good used Bear 'curve. At this time of year, some guys are selling off "custom" bows for extra Christmas money. Try this site--------------

I've bought, sold and traded on this site many times and have had all good experiences. Traditional archery gets ahold of you, so be prepared  Mike Bolin

Thanks for the site link.  I was crusing around it the other night.  Some of the used stuff currently on there is still a bit pricey.  But the guys on Archery Network also suggested checking out a guy named Dan Quillian.  He makes longbows at a very reasonable price.  Im not quite sure if I want to go THAT far traditional, but Im not positively sure the recurve is how I want to go.  Is there really a big difference, from a target shooting standpoint, between recurve and longbow?
Thanks again,

There is a huge difference between longbow and recurve. They are 2 totaly different styles of shooting. There is a great traditional archery store righ in NH where you can go shoot both types and talk to guys who can help you out.

I have been shooting recurves for over 20 years and absolutely love it. What ever style of bow you choose good luck.

I have always tended to shoot a recurve with more consistency than a longbow.....until this past summer! I borrowed a longbow from a buddy to go to a shoot in southern IN, so that I could shoot all three classes-selfbow, already have a couple of them; longbow, the one that I borrowed; recurve, my old reliable! I ended up shooting about 50 points higher with the borrowed longbow than with my recurve. Over the course of the late summer and early fall, I managed to talk my buddy into selling that longbow to me. If you get the chance, try to attend a traditional shoot and try some different bows. Most trad shooters are more than willing to let you try out their bow(s). If you let me know for sure what you are looking to spend and the length and weight at your draw length you're looking for, I'll keep an eye out for a deal.  Since switching from a compound to a recurve/longbow, I have killed several whitetail deer, 2 caribou, and a black bear. A well tuned stickbow with the proper arrow/broadhead is a very capable hunting weapon. Merry Christmas-Mike
