Back to Win 296????
« on: September 16, 2004, 05:38:22 PM »
I much prefer the blast and recoil from IMR 4227 in my 41 Mag but the groups are around 1 1/2" at 50 yards.  With all the blast and recoil from 296 my groups are around 3/4" at 50 yards.

Someone please tell me I should just be happy with the 1 1/2" since that will kill any deer I see.

But man that 296 shoots good.

Maybe some Lil Gun.......

Was gonna mention the LilGun, in some cases it doesn't seem to give the flamethrower affect. Have to agree that sometimes the ole 296/110 just does the job!

296 is the powder I love to hate. It's hard to handle (dusty and gums up my powder measure). It's sooty when fired. But in the loads I use it for, it's the most accurate. I'd say if you are happy with your accuracy stick with what you have, if you are trully seeking the most accurate load use the 296 load.

Jack,
What do you mean it's dusty? How old of a lot do you have, or has it been shaken around alot? All the 296 I have is very clean and clean burning also. Most all the cases come out either looking unfired or have a white coating inside. The only time I get the sootiness is with light bullets and charges.

This is all I know about Win. 296. I not only load for muself but several friends, and Win-296 not only get the highest velsity of all the other powders on the market but it gets good accuracy in all of the gun it has been used in. I load .357 mag., .357 max., .44 mag. and .454 and  Win
-296 gives me the most velosity and good accuracy in all of the gun I`ve seen it tried in. H-110 is about the same , but I can find Win-2967 cheaper so I use it, and I love it. If H-110 was cheaper I would use it, but no other powder has come close to these 2 powders for high powder hunting loads.

Dusty may have been a poor choice of words but it seems to find it's way into any crack.

I bought the can about a year or so ago. No telling how long the dealer had it before that.

I get soot on the outside of .22 hornet and .30 carbine, both of the loads I use it for. Both near or at the max load.

Ahh yes the creepy ball powder!!! Know what ya mean, stuff leaks out of my Lee powder measure all over the press. That Ramshot's even worse, smaller balls and they roll all over the place. That seems strange on the sooting, I also use it in my hornet and get very little on the necks and I have a old lot and some newer stuff.

Well I shot a 6 shot group at 50 yards Saturday with the IMR 4227 loads and it measured exactly 1".  I was happy and thought I was done.

Got it back out today and was wandering around the target.  Had a few shots where they should have been but 4 of the shots was in a nice group about 4" high.  I am assuming it was a bad day of shooting by the knucklehead pulling the trigger, guess I will find out next weekend.
