I know Thomspon/Center's are good muzzleloaders but I want some opinions about a T/C Hawken. Anybody have em? Shot em?

Been using TC Hawkens exclusively going on 15 years, and have accumulated several calibers in percussion, then expanded into several calibers of flintlocks...shoot or hunt them every weekend year round.

They're an excellent quality firearm for the money, have good eye appeal, hold their resale value, and TC's lifetime warranty and service is second to none.

If this will be a first/single muzzleloader that you'll use on deer, a .50cal would probably be a good minimum...the size of patched round balls or conicals for a .50cal will cover most north american game.

If you are going after something larger, particularly something that can bite back, you'll probably want to consider a .54cal.

I had previously owned a CVA Silver Trophy Hunter, so it's not my first muzzleloader. Never killed a deer with it, and never will.

Well, not sure what to make of your reply...your original post gave no indications of what you planned to use one for...it also listed various references to small game so I assumed you were a hunter...and specifically with your reference to "63 days to PA Muzzleloader" I assumed you were considering a muzzleloader for larger game...was just trying to help you man

I think what fishman meant is that, he is looking for a new muzzleloader for hunting and that he is getting rid of his old one, Quote-Never killed a deer with it never will -Quote
Im assuming that that is what he meant....I have a T/C hawken and I love it, its also a nice looking gun.
Good Luck, Be Safe, and God Bless  :D

My 54 TC Hawken is always my first choice.  I have an 209x50 encore that has never made it to my deer stand.

I've never had a failure with it.  Quality is the best.  My only complaint is the factory sights - not very good.  I replaced them with Williams WGOS Sights.

My guess is he'll never kill a deer with the CVA due to the gun itself?!?  If you've owned a CVA, you'll know what I mean.

 My 1st muzzleloader was a .50 T/C Hawken. It had the 1/48" twist and shot maxi-balls about 4 inches at 100 yards and near that with round balls.. That was years ago and it got sold to fund a custom rifle with slow twist and deep rifling to shoot patched round ball.. Then Green Mountain came out with barrels like that for the Hawken and Renegade for years then discontinued all but a big caliber one.. Now they make other calibers again.. With the Hawken you can get several caliber and twist barrels from Cabelas and other places, so I recently got another Hawken and a Green Mountain .50 barrel with deep rifling and slow twist for round ball..  I came full circle in 22 years. I still like to deer hunt with a Flintlock rifle though in primitive weapons season, but I my tired eyes and open sights are not clicking like they did so I may put a Red Dot on the Hawken this year..  cbagman

Well, bagman, you must be lucky. Because here in PA, you can only use scope sights in the early season (October) and no scope sights are allowed in the late season (December-January). You have to use iron sights in the late season...they will let you use fiber optic sights in the late season however.

What's the obvious difference between the T/C Hawken and the Renegade?...Is the Hawken just fancier with brass or is there other ways to tell?

Dang nab it...nuttin can go right the first time, right?    :x . I get to the gunshop today to find out the Traditions Hawken he ordered was a percussion    I wanted a flintlock b/c u can only use flintlock during the late season in PA. So now I have to wait another week before I can get the right one (and the new one is $60 more...go figure). So at most...I'm gonna have a month to get the feel for it, experiment w/ it and find what it likes. Man o man...talk about cuttin it close.

It is now September 20th and I'm heading to the gunshop this afternoon to pick up THE RIGHT GUN (It better be...or w/e it is I'll load it up and shoot myself  ). That leaves me a little less than a month before the season. I think I just better fire it once at a few different targets and pray the bullet goes at the same point each time. Gettin too late now to start joggling around powder charges and trying different patch thickness. But I suppose if the accuracy is just plain awful, I'll have to. Adios!  :D

Thanks crow. One thing I was pondering today is the fact I'm only allowed to take 2 deer this year; a buck and a doe...or a new law in PA says hunters hunting in the late-muzzleloader season (aka flintlock season) may harvest another doe with the unused buck tag. So...I might get a doe during the first season (which is antlerless only anyway) then unless I get a buck during the firearms season...gear up for a deer period during the flintlock season. Thanks again and same to you!  :D
