22 Hornet barrel twist ?
« on: March 11, 2004, 02:09:57 PM »
I have all the reloading "stuff" for a hornet. I had a ruger #3, till I rebarreled it. 40-90 sharps.......Any way........the little hornet shot 50 grain blitz bullets stuffed full of imr 4227. then they started to key hole.
I never thought that a 16" twist was fast enough. Does anyone make a production gun with a 1 in 12 twist?  Those blitz's were very deadly on woodchucks at 100 to 150 yds..............................BS

TC Contenders have a 1:12, seems to be about the fastest twist available. I have been playing with the idea of setting up a CZ 527 with a 1:9 twist in 22 K Hornet to play with 70 gr. cast bullets. I too think the manufacturers are missing the boat by not making fast twist hornets. I was very dissapointed that the neat new Savage 40 is going to be 1:16 as well.

BS,

I have two Rugers, one 77/22 VHZ and the other a No.1B, in the .22 Hornet and both have a 1:14" twist.  Both stabilize bullets up to 55 grains(the highest weight I have loaded) and give excellent accuracy.  These are my calling and number one fun rifles.  Lawdog

Lawdog,

Have you used 50 gr. blitz bullets yet? They were great shooters for me.

Never had a chance to try the new polly tip bullets.

What shoots best in your #1?

Noblade,

I will have to look at the contenders!

Thanks, BS

BS,

It is a toss up between the Hornady V-Max and Nosler's Ballistic Tips.  They both seem to give great accuracy.  I kind of go by price.  Right now I am shooting Ballistic Tips I got on Ebay.  Never tried the Blitz bullet yet but if I can get them at the right price I just may.  Lawdog

The NEF Handigun in 22 Hornet also uses a 1:12 twist these days.
