spotting scope question for jose
« on: June 10, 2004, 06:35:50 AM »
I had this post on the optics discussion board and thought I would run it by you.  My buddys and I do a lot of 500 yard target shooting and are getting tired of riding the 4-wheeler back and forth to see where the bullets are hitting. We bought a cheap Bushnell 60X spotter but can't see the 22-250 and 220 Swift holes.  I had several replies recommending the following.  Baush and Lomb Elite 20-60x80mm, Swarovski STS-80, Nikon Sky & Earth 20-60x80.  As ususal, price will be a big consideration in our choice.  We are leaning towards the Nikon.  Do you have any suggestions.

I'm not Jose and others will know a lot more about optics than I but I don't think you will find any scope, at any price, which will resolve .22 caliber bullet holes at 500 yards. Normal mirage conditions will prevent that.

I don't remember the brand, but we had a $1500 spotting scope here in our club. That was 10 or 15 years ago. It was the best at the time & as clear as could be. It would NOT do what you want.
Your best bet is to dig a pit & pile up a berm. We spent $28000 on our pits when we built them 10 or 12 years ago.
Next best is some shoot & see targets on top of regular targets.
I use a 20X60X60 & I can't see .308 holes at 500, much less 600, so I don't think glass is gonna help.

Solved the 500 yard spotting issue.  Got a 22" X 24" piece of flat 1/4" steel and mounted it on a piece of plywood and painted it white.  Placed the target stand 12" in front of it.  Bullet contact leaves a black spot about the size of a nickel easily seen through our rifle scopes.  When we go down to set up new targets, just slap on some fresh paint and ready to go again.

Now that's a heck of a good idea. Using the ol' noggin for something besides a hatrack for sure. Good tip for the rest of us!!! Thanks !!
