What to do ????

Have a model 700 rem in 308 win. wondering what is the biggest  caliber brush gun that could be made out of it without changing the bolt face. I would like to use the same action and stock.Barrel length would be 20 inches. BANG. What do you think

Seems to me the .358 Win may be your best bet. It's basically a .308 necked up to .35 cal and it'll sure give any a game a good wallop.

Is there any reason, though, why you can't simply load the .308 with 180gn or 200gn RNSP bullets and use that load? They move slower but they have mass on their side. Sierra makes a .30 cal 180gn Pro-Hunter & Hornady make a .30 cal 180gn RN too. These should suit your purpose fine.

Lets see, a short action with a .473" bolt face. Hmmm, many good possibilities.
My choice would be tha standard .284 Winchester case, for maximum case capacity. Necking it up to the caliber .375.  A good enough bullet selection that will work, at the velocity generated by the 284 case. And take any animal on this continent at short to moderate range. And while I haven't looked in to it, I think the short 700 action magazine, will accept the round.

Onesonek, can the 308 win be blown out to 375 or bigger such as the 375 whelen. Is there enough shoulder for correct head space  and enough velocity for the bullets to work. With keeping the same case what is the biggest that it can be made into and work. Already have a 358 win.

The shoulder is adequate for a 375-08, but I would prefer more. (that's just me though) One could reduce body taper and increase shoulder angle, providing a more "positive" headspace situation.  But, this could lead to feeding problems. They can be dealt with also.  I haven't run the numbers, but suspect the velocity decrease will be such, that bullet selection might be a little more critical. I would think with the lighter bullets, it would still be an effective round on deer and black bear round out to a 100yds, maybe farther. I don't know how it would work with bullets over 225 grs. . Most of those bullets were designed with more velocity in mind, except the flat nosed ones.  By rights, (piston effect) one could expect like velocities in a 375-308/358, as with same bullet weight in the 358 win.. But the case is relatively small and very efficient. The returns of the piston effect in going to a larger caliber in efficient cases are diminished somewhat, but should close enough to give you a idea of what you might be looking velocity wise.  If the 375-08 serves your needs or wants, there is certainly nothing wrong with that choice.

Guess for what you get after the conversion it's not really worth it. It never hurts to ask an opinion. Thanks. In do time I will figure out what to make it.
