I finally found me a big bore!  Got a .45/70 coming in from the NEF classified section.  This is what it looks like.


This my first excursion into anything larger than .35 Whelen.

Sorry, but I have 4 receivers to pick from!  :grin:   I'll probably use the receiver I have a shotgun barrel on now.

I kinda like the idea of the recoil pad it has, but this one seems to be squashed a little.  :shock:   It's only supposed to have had about 50 rounds shot through it, so that doesn't bode well if that pad really is squashed!

I just heard about a new stock, but I'll start a new thread on it.

Ron,

I was just kidding about the recoil I'm expecting.  :grin:  Of course, you could reassure me by telling me it only kicks like a .22 Hornet! :roll:

In all honesty, the picture looks like some of the better figured wood and should make up into a real nice gun.  The picture didn't disappoint me at all.

Congrats on the new 45-70 Paul.

You're going to love that gun.  

Try some 405 grain cast bullets, and H4198.  The 459-405 Lee mould shoots great in my barrel.

Ron said it was put on UPS this morning!  It should be here by the end of the week.  :-D   :-D   :-D   :grin:   Now I need to get the brass, bullets and reloading dies headed this way.

mine is a fun gun. now you are going to have to start casting.
I have a lee mold, shoot them just out of the mold no sizeing lube,

Foxcaller delivered a real nice package today via USPS!

I got everything mounted up and took a couple of test shots.  If those 300 gr Rem HP's with 16.5 gr Blue Dot are actually doing 1100 fps, the recoil isn't much more than my .357 shooting 250 gr bullets at 1200 fps.  Of course, I won't actually know until I put it through the chrony and that isn't going to happen for a few days.

I'm leaving for Mac's part of the world in the morning to visit kinfolks I haven't seen in 14 years.  All my aunts and uncles are getting old, including the one that is younger than me!  :grin:

Marv, I hate toll roads, so I'm going up to Little Rock and then up the east side of Arkansas instead of going to Tulsa and then across on whatever route 66 is called now.  I think they may have an internet connection somewhere up there, so I may check in while I'm there.   :grin:

Heck just go ahead and use those toll roads Paul..just run on thru the pay stations...... Heck I've paid enough into the till and in state taxes over the years for both of us...and since I live in Texas now if ya get caught just tell the trooper that Deadeye said it was ok to use the roads up there for free...... :-D

Thanks Deadeye, I'm sure that would carry a lot of weight!

Actually, I went to Little Rock, then to Memphis anbd then up I-55 to St.Louis.  It was clocked at 650 miles and took about 10.5 hours.  I stopped one time for gas and one time for a "pit" stop.  The seats on my Grand Cherokee fit pretty well, so it wasn't much of a problem to drive 250 miles without needing to get out and stretch.

I don't know how Mac can stand the way they drive up here!  It sure ain't East Texas!  :grin:

Thankfully, I survived the trip!  :grin:

I did make a little side venture into Graf's territory over in Mexico, MO.  I found out it could have been a waste of time, if I hadn't wanted some powder.  The prices are the same as what they have posted online, even though they don't have to ship the items.  I did get 4 pounds of 2400, which may be the next powder I try in the .45/70.

Here's what I posted on another site about today's shooting.

This load is pretty sparse in populating that large case, so I noticed the shots grouped according to the powder placement. There are two shots (not including the factory hole in the target) at the very top of the target where the powder was shifted to the rear of the case by lifting the barrel before shooting. The third hole (actually the first shot) in the dog leg group was shot without lifting the barrel. Either the cold barrel made it shoot lower or the powder position made it shoot lower.

The last three shots were with someone's hand loads. I was assured they didn't kick, just a little shove. Why do people always have to lie about that kind of thing?  :eek:  #1 son said he sure was glad it had a recoil pad! They're probably not the hottest ever loaded, but they're flinch makers! I shot the three at about 10 o'clock into about 2" at 100 yards using a 4X Tasco.

Paul...if you have access to some Unique you need to try 13.5 grains using either a 405gr w/GC or a 300gr w/GC bullet....they really shoot nice and you can shoot them all day long...nothing wrong with the  accuracy in my rifle either......Try um you'll like um...... :-)

Deadeye,

Unique is another of those powders that I have never had.  I don't know why, but it just never figured into my reloading plans.  However, I was persuaded to get some Universal, which should be very similar to Unique.  I may try some after I get through with my Blue Dot testing.  Maybe someone has already tried Universal and has some loading data?
