Scope on .22 cal

Hi--

I plan on hunting rabbits this fall/winter. I just recieved a .22 caliber pump rifle. It does not have a scope on it.

Would you recommend putting one on? If so, which one do you recommend?

Thanks, Jason

......I have scopes on all my rifles and you don't mention a price range.....I gave up on low priced scopes and their poor performance ......for a rimfire you need a special rimfire set scope..a regular 1 inch scope tube but the scope is set for the closer range that you shoot a 22 and I have use all the Leupold rimfire scopes.....the 4x is light and small and very clear.......the 2-7 rimfire special would be my choice of them for rabbits...the 2x would let you see the moving ones and if you still hunt the higher powers would let you see them good for head shots and not ruin any good meat........If this is out of the price range maybe some others have had experience..good ones...with less expensive glass.....some good dovetail rings such as Burris will hold the scope fine on grooved receivers of rimfires...good luck and good shooting-hunting!!!

Hello HuntingGuy,

For a 22 rifle I prefer an objective no larger than 32mm. You will see a lot of people putting 40mm and 50mm on a 22 rifle. I don’t like this because it puts the center of the cross hairs so far above the center of the bore. A ½ inch or an inch makes a big difference when shooting small animals like squirrels and rabbits.

People may like the large objective lens because they like to shoot animals 50, 60 or even 100 yards. It has never made much sense to me to shoot a squirrel or rabbit at a long distance away then have to disturb the hunting woods while making your way to claim your animal. If I shoot a small animal that far off and take my time hunting while getting there I usually cannot find them.

I prefer a good name scope like daddy was talking about but if you aren’t willing to spend a large amount of money on a scope, “Swift” makes a great scope in the 100 dollar range and they have an over the counter trade in if the scope breaks. I have a Swift on one of my 22s and it’s very clear and rugged and holds it’s zero. For a 22, I feel that’s all you need. I would look into the 2-7x32 or smaller objective or fixed 4 power scopes and look at several sets of scope rings and find the set that allows you to mount the scope as low as possible with out the objective touching the barrel.

Hope this helps,
Scott

Hey Jason,

The Tasco will do just fine but I think Tasco is out of buisness and you have to pay for their waranty work now. I'm not positive about this so I "pm'd" a guy in the "optics" forum about this. I'm waiting on his reply. It may prove that Bushnell may be a better choice.

As soon as I hear back from him I'll let you know.

Scott

Tasco is back in business.  Now owned by Bushnell.  If your looking for a 3-9x32mm scope for your .22 check out Ebay.  I just bought three new Simmons Deerfield 3-9x32mm scopes for my grandkids .22 rifles I'm setting up for them.  Full factory warranty on them.  These are full size 1" tube scopes.  I bought them off the Buy It Now section and didn't get into a bidding war that can drive the price way up.  Here is thew link to that section.

Hey Jason,

I’ve talked to a few different people: Zachary and Greybeard about your scope. For the price range of those scopes I think the Bushnell would be the way to go. Here is a picture of it http://www.bushnell.com/productinfo/riflescopes/rimfire.html It’s the one to the far left. If you have your heart set on the Tasco it will do fine. The Tasco or the Bushnell will suit your needs fine but if I were to choose I’d go with the Bushnell based on what I’ve been told.

They said that Tasco went out of business and Bushnell bought out Tascos rights.

Here is a place that you can get a price on the Bushnell though you may want to look around you may find a better deal. http://www.riflescopes.com/riflescopes/bushnell/index.html

Maybe some of these other guys will give you their idea on these scopes.

Good luck and be safe,
Scott

Be sure to get a rimfire scope or one that is parralax adjustable.  A regular scope on a .22 will work but your accuracy will suffer.

HuntingGuy,

The new Bushnell owned Tasco I have no idea about.  Haven't tried them or know of anyone that has.  The old Tasco scope was a P.O.S. that wasn't worth the shipping charge let alone the cost.  The warranty was only good enough to use for toilet paper and it wasn't very good for that.  I was personally bit by them as was a number of our club members.  A few years ago, before Tasco went under, I served as club secretary and the club got a number of "Special Sales" offers from Tasco.  Many of our members took advantage of these offers(including me) and most of the scopes failed.  Many were delivered that wouldn't adjust for windage or elevation or both.  Many wouldn't change focus or the AO wouldn't work.  Getting Tasco to make good on these was a lesson learned by many.  By the way any good rifle scope works just fine on .22 lr as most shots are at ranges from 20 yards or greater.  Lawdog
