Finally had to get in on the fun
« on: May 10, 2005, 03:37:48 AM »
Bought me a Savage 93R17 in Left Hand, put a Bushnell Banner 6-24 with Mildot reticule on it. Agreed with everyone right off that the trigger is severe, so before ever trying it, did the shim mod. Finally got a chance this weekend to try it out. first shot at 25 yards,2 inches low, no problem. adjusted scope and moved target out to what I thought was 100 yards, but paced it at 120 paces. next 3 shots would easily be coverd by a dime. I was grinning so hard by then that I couldnt hardly shoot any more. Scope works out great, I can see .17 cal holes at this distance. Dont know the pound pull on hte trigger, but it works fine for me. This is a keeper.

Yep......I understand completely........I've got the 93r17 in BVSS.........I also shimmed the trigger before shooting it.  I used a .025 under the front and back and also cut a couple of coils off the spring.........I don't have a trigger pull gauge, but mine's plenty light and has no creap...... I got very similar results as you and left the range smiling ear to ear........It's a fun gun to shoot!

I've  killed a crow with mine.......and that was with the 20 grain XTP......I got no expansion with it on the crow at 100 yards..........Killed a snapper at about 85 yards....used the 17 grain hollow point....shot it through the eye.....just where I was aiming......took the top of it's head off..........the bullet expanded, or exploded just fine.......

I enjoy reading all the post about if the .17 HMR is enough gun for coyotes......Some say it is......some say it isn't.........and for some....there is not much choice.....other than the .22mag...........

The accuracy is great.........now if the price of ammo would come down by about half..............

If you want the same accuracy as the HMR with lower price ammo get a HM2.  Laser flat to 100 yards and 1/3 cheaper ammo.  Both of the 17 rimfores are neat for what they are: small game.

I just got one of the .17 mach2's a few weeks back
And I now can't wait for Fall to pick off cotton tails along
my fence lines with it. I kinda' feel bad though because my
.22's have stayed in the racks since I bought the .17.
I think I'll have to shoot them some this weekend to let
them know they are still loved. :)

Looks like you are hooked.
I have a Marlin 917V, and a Savage 93R17-BVSS. Both are shooters.
Feels good when you ocasionally get three or four rounds touching or almost touching @ 100 yards.
Enjoy your new gun and be sure to try all the different ammo to see which groups best in your gun.

I bought some 17 grain CCI's at Dicks Sporting goods a month or so ago when they had them on sale.........they don't shoot the best in my gun, but for price versus accuracy they were a good buy..........and the gun shoots 3/4 to 1 inch with them........with several holes touching........that's the thing about the .17HMR......from what I've read, even with ammo that isn't what the gun likes......most still shoot an inch or less.......at 100 yards.......
