Last year I took an 80 yard quartering-toward shot on a good sized muley buck.  My bullet, a 117 grain Speer Hot-Cor out of a .25-06, "exploded on the deer's shoulder, causing minimal damage.  Long story short, the deer got away (luckily, we got another shot at it the next day and were able to put it down humanely), but I don't want to go through the exploding bullet ordeal again.

What factory loads do you recommend for large deer from a 25-06?  I will also be using the load on a cow elk hunt this year.

I do not handload, so some of the choices I've looked at are:

Federal: Nosler Partition, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Barnes Triple Shock (100gr)
Remington: Premier Core-Lokt Ultra
Hornady: Interlock (L. Mag)
Any others?

I would go with any of the Federal loads you mentioned...they should do a great job ...the X-bullets have had great luck penatrating and staying together...these will be my choice for my 257 Weatherby Mag...

BusterNW,

I am a long time fan of the "Quarter Bores" with the .25-06 being my favorite.  Got three of them at the moment(Ruger M77V(older tang safety model), Remington M700BDL Varmint and a Ruger No. 1) with the M77V my favorite.  The velocity of the .25-06(over 3,000 fps.) almost requires the use of premium/bonded bullets.  I have used the 115 gr. Nosler Partition for all my deer hunting and never had a problem.  Lately though I have been shooting the 100 gr. Barnes TSX bullet.  Accuracy is even better than what I get with the Partitions and the sow hog I shot a couple of weeks(1 shot, 211 yards and she dropped with her nose in the water where she was drinking) ago has me going to try them on deer this year.  Either of these should keep you from ever having that problem again.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

My .257 cal. is a Roberts, a 1989 Ruger.  It likes the Barnes 115g TSX's over 48.0g H4831SC (with CCI 250 primer, WW +P brass) for 2958fps.

I have two quarter bores: .257 Ackley Improved and a .257 Weatherby Magnum. My favorite bullet for the ..257 Ackley Imp. is the 100 gr. Nosler Partition and for the Weatherby the 115 gr. Nosler Partition. I have also used the Barnes X bullet in 100 gr and the Nosler Partition in 120 gr. I have taken whitetails, mule deer and antelope very successfully for the past 25 years with them.

I have taken deer from 25 to 385 yards with Hornady 117 grain SPBT Interlocks with no bullet failures to date. Muzzle velocity out of my 26" barrel is well over 3000 FPS.

Winchester Supreme Ammunition 25-06 Remington 115 Grain Ballistic Silvertip

I started doing his reloading for him and loves this round on deer and other varmints.

Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip 115gr. out of Ruger M77 25-06. I'm using Reloader19 with a FPS of 3215. (Which I think is the same bullet used in the factory load mentioned above)

Sub .750" groups at 100 yards.

He was getting just under 1.5" groups at 100 yards with the factory stuff.
