45-70 ruptured case?
« on: October 15, 2004, 05:17:26 PM »
I posted this in the reloading forum as well.

First time this has happened to me. I just got a 45-70gg and was working on some loads. I had worked my way up to 51.5 gr of 3031 and a 405gr rem. and had shot about 10 rounds when one ruptured. There was no sign of excesive pressure prior, the loads should be around 27000cup. All the brass was new winchester. Any ideas what I did wrong?

Sounds like bad brass to me.
I bought 100 new win. brass couple years back. The shells where 44 Mag.
Had three of them split about the center of the shell.
Still reloading the rest of them with no problems.

I run 55 gr of 3031 behind a 350 gr bullet in my 1895G.  I've shot hundreds of these.  No problems.  I would tend to think bad brass.  I use Remington nickle and Winchester brass.

Thanks,

I think I'll give it a couple more rounds and see if it happens again. I checked the rest of the brass I shot that day and there aren't any signs of bulging on them. So perhaps bad brass.
