I'm intrested in getting a squirrel dog but I'm not sure what kind or even what to look for. I asked on another site and everyone wanted me to buy a dog from them.

I have squirrel hunted for alot of years and I could give you a couple numbers of the guys I would recommend. Top notch breeders, with exceptional dogs. One is in Indiana and another is here in Tennessee. If they dont have what you want they will help you find what your looking for.

I don't know if you have tried Squirrel Dog Central or not. That's a decent site to find some answers about squirrel dogs. I bought a Mt Cur from a fellow that lives about 10 miles from me. It was pure luck. But I have been looking at this breed for over a year. He's only 6 months old but he's showing some promise

I found that site and ended up putting a deposit on a Mountain Fiest. Now the wait.

Why would u need squirrel dog when you can take a bag of Black sunflower seed to your huntting place and limit out by 9:00am! :grin: :grin:

yu would be suprised what kind of dog would make a good bushtail hunter.i had a aussie collie cross when i was a kid that was the absolute best dog ive ever seen. but i think the key was i spent time in the woods training him to know what i was after.he would bark on tree if he couildnt see me or if i acted like i ignored him. he would follow them when they ran thru the branches to another tree and actually would tree anything that would tree. later i had a rottweiler that was the same way. her biggest problem was she preferred to eat the squirrels after they fell and didnt always like to be interrupted. good luk with yur choice.

Never hunted squirrels with a dog, but everything I've heard about them says a Mtn. Fiest is the way to go.

the mt curs make great tree dogs, we hunt hogs with them when we can keep them off trees :-D :-D :-D

I have thought about getting a squirrel dog in the past to hunt with,but nobody raises dogs in this part of the US for squirrel hunting.My dad is from KY and as a kid he spent alot of his time hunting squirrels with his grandpa who always had a squirrel dog.I have always wondered if a jack russel would make a good squirrel dog?

Hey curdog, I would love to see those dogs climb a tree! What are they doing, escaping the hog's? :-D

I had a ½ border collie, ½ lab that loved to hunt squirrels. Not only could she find them but also if they made the mistake of hitting the ground she was on them like ugly on an ape and crunch it was over. Unlike the problem with the rot, when they were dead she had no more interest in them. Saved a lot on bullets that way.

I can answer that question for you. I raise them. I have a male that is a squirrel hunting machine. If you look where he's looking in the tree you'll eventually find the squirrel. He almost never misses. I use a 38 special light (very light) load in my squirrel rifle and he knows when I come out with that Model 92 where were going. On down side is I have pecan trees in my back yard and when he trees I have to go and shoot the durn thing so he'll relax and shut up. He isn't real barky though. Sometimes he just barely barks but, as a rule they hunt close.

best squirrel dog i ever saw was a bluetick hound. the second best is kenneled at my house right now 1/2 jackrussel 1/2 spitz

I'll bet that's an interesting dog. He probably is torn between digging a small hole in the yard or pulling a sled. What does he look like and how much does he weigh?

I have never hunted squirrel's with a dog. From what I've read over the years, one of the biggest assets of a dog is that it goes to the other side of the tree making the squirrel go around to your side giving you the shot.

I have been thinking about a squirrel dog myself lately, after "Otis" is gone. The Jack Russell has been my first concideration and a rat terrier has made me think. As long as they bark a bit probally either would do. Next door neighbor has a "Min Snou93874693099 (got no idea how to spell that)", that barks all the time and chase's every thing that moves on my place!

Rat terriers are great. Good little dogs, feisty, and full of grit. Will also chase anything that moves, and they think they are about 200 lbs. My brothers one time at the vet's office went after a Great Dane.

I had my first hunt for squirrels with Mountain Curs yesterday and it was a hoot!

The dogs were fun and so was listening to the two "good old boys" who took me hunting. I'm looking at a couple litters right now and hope to make a decision soon as to which pup. Mountain curs seem to vary in size depending on the breeding and I want a smaller one for here in Ohio.

This is a lot of fun.
