I recently returned from a blackpowder mule deer hunt in Colorado.
The hunt was very challenging. Getting into muzzleloader range above timberline proved to be alot of fun. I blew several stalks because of the wind shifting direction before I could get close enough for a shot. I actually had one buck bedded down at 40 yards, but all I could see was horns!! That buck finally wound up winding me and jumped up and made two hops and was gone. I was finally able to crawl and get into position to make a 126 yard shot (according to my laser range finder) on this guy.
I was shooting an Encore with my new VVCG .50 caliber barrel. The barrel is equipped with a rear aperture sight from New England Custom. The load was a 295 grain HP Powerbelt over 110 grains of Triple 7. The shot entered on the right side of the deer just behind the front leg, traveled through the lungs and lodged under the shoulder bone on the opposite side. The buck might have went ten yards after the shot. I was very pleased with the accuracy of the barrel and the performance of the bullet.
I'm looking forward to next year already. But I probably won't be able to draw a tag again. :roll:
