I have been working with the 22 hornet for some time now , I have tried numerous bullets and settled on the 40 grain v-max (able to buy in bulk) and good accuracy . I have started with 4227 powder and fired 9 , 5 shot groups at 100 meters and had a average of .730 for the groups with the best being .450 and the worst being 1.125 . I then tried 1680 for 6 groups with average of .680 and had 2 groups that measured .430 with a group at 1.230 after the guy next to me fired a braked 300 win mag just as I was squeezing off the shot . On one group it started out so good I opened the action to look down the bore to be sure the bullets were leaving the barrel .
I have tried the lil gun loads with dismal success but will try some more powders , The hornet is turning into a sweet little round !!

I always like the H-4227 in the Hornet. Great little round for varmints.

I have a CZ 527 hornet and am accruing some experience developing loads.

I have found W296 to be the overall most accurate with all bullets thus far (35 / 40 gr vmax, 45 gr. hornady hornet). H4227 is an absolute tack driver with the 35 vmax (10/32" groups). I put all of my successes aside to try and get Lil Gun to work. It does give sub 1" groups but no where near 4227/w296. I'm still hoping to get Lil gun to work, latest attempts with WSP primers look encouraging. I have also just switched to WW cases and have deburred flash hole, primer pocket and trimmed/  sorted cases by weight. Hope this gets Lil Gun to work.

Good Luck,

Mirage

I have a 21 in. contender barrel in 22-k-hornet. i shoot 35gr. v-max. w-296. and yes, small pistol primers. into smaller groups than some say is possible with a hornet, or a brake open carbine. on perfectly still days it will do an inch at 200 yards, if i do my part. the small pistol
primers gave less variation in velocity. they showed no signs of pressure, even when pushed to 3200 fps.(considering hornadys factory load for regular hornet is 3100) i feel comfortably with 3200 in an improved chamber. I never worked with the regular hornet, BUT SURE LOVE MY(K)

1680 has been THE powder in several Hornets that I have owned.

300 Loudnboomer,
I have had great luck with Calhoon 37gr bullets in front of 12.5 grs. lil gun powder in my hornets. It works in both of my barrels. Good luck and stay safe............Joe..............

Try small pistol primers too.  I've found they quiet groups down.

i never could get Lil Gun to shoot in my hornet or my fireball very well either, and ran into pressure problems in the fireball well before getting to what i thought was an acceptable velocity.. tried several bullets but just never found a favorite load with this powder. My barrels like the Hornady 45 grain hornet, and AA1680. Also did OK with H-110 but never got peak velocity with this powder... pistol primers did help in my hornet.

Yep, Molly's a brit.  She's a pretty good bird dog.  Not quite up to the standard my late English Setter set but few dogs are.   I'll have to try some of those Calhoon bullets.

Hey Everyone;  Just opened up this topic for the first time cuz I just love my little TC carbine in hornet but just wondering after seeing the velocity mentioned and wonder what others get.  My load is 10.7 gr of ww296 under 45 gr Horn. generating 2800 fps and good groups, well good for me any way.  Have been using sm rifle cci primers but will try pistol.  I use a lot of 296 in pistols and always believed you need magnum primers to set it off.

Wincehster does say to use a Magnum primer with 296.  I load IMR 4227 and use CCI Magnum Rifle Primers in mine since I have a bunch of them left over from when I used to have a 357 Max.  My accuracy is less than an inch at 100 yards with a 10" pistol barrel.
