As a Canuck myself, I'm sure you've seen the idiotic things we go through with firearms as it is.  I know handgun hunting has not been allowed in my lifetime ( I'm 31 ) - but I would sure love to have - but it aint gonna happen.  That alone is almost enough to make me move to the U.S.A.  I really can't give you a concrete answer as to why we can't.  I guess our gov't doesn't trust us with 'em..........

What I’m wondering is if it would be legal for us canucks to take our "evil women and children killing" handguns south to hunt?

I’m a little cranky, keep hearing rumors the transfer fees are coming back. Also took a look at Wendy Cukier's site. For you confused Americans she’s a northern Brady. Her site says they're not out to get legal hunters and sport shooters. BS!! Basically says that any man who owns any gun is a potential killer of women and children, and is guilty until proved otherwise.

Sorry for going of topic, but I had to vent.

I'm one of a very few nonenforcement Canadians that is licenced to carry a handgun for "protection of my life or the lives of others from wild animals" but only when I am involved in my job in remote wilderness areas of my province. I carry 10mm's, 45 Colts and now I have stopped messing around while the big animals are out and carry a SRH 454 Casull.

It has been since about 1934 that handguns came under restriction here. Even though I understand that Canadian laws state that we are legally allowed to carry a handgun for protection, there is so much red tape that it has been made almost impossible to get a handgun carry permit.

So I'm sorry but the powers that be say that there is no way that you'll ever get to handgun hunt here.

Off topic alert!!!...

I work with some Canadians now and I have never seen such an unpatriotic group of people. It's uncanny how much they despise their own country.

I found their stories of the Canadian health care system particularly alarming, as it favors the young and makes the old wait so long that they often die of their ailments before they can get treatment.

One man lost his father most tragically: He was bleeding internally. The paramedics got there in time. They correctly diagnosed the situation. They got him to the hospital in time. In the US he would have been operated on and the ruptured artery would have been patched and the prognosis for a decent recovery and probably more years of life would have been good. In Canada he died in the waiting room because the younger people with non-threatening injuries had priority. The doctors are not ashamed of this situation because "that's the way it is here [in Canada]."

As always, I find it edifying and educational to work with people from around the world.

I've also worked with people from China who have a fascinating way of getting the education they need in the US. They go to Vancouver, BC. Go on the dole, get their education mostly at the expense of the Canadian people, and upon graduating come to the US because that's where the jobs are.  These are not isolated cases. It's more of a well used pipleline.

Then there are the mystifying economic decisions. My favorite, but not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, was a major drag race that for years was bringing millions of dollars into Canada for a week-end long event  Leaded fuel was banned. No exception for the drag race would be made. The racers would not used unleaded fuel at the time. The drag race is no longer in Canada and those millions are now back where they belong.  One would think that an exception would be made for a situation like this because of the localized impact and because of the huge benefit.

Oh well, back to guns....

Canadians as a whole are not unpatriotic what the problem is here, is that all political power is in the Prime Ministers office which is power based from the east. Bitch and complain all you want it just doesn't get you anywhere.
I for one have always been very proud to be a Canadian........
but as the years go by I feel that we are having weaker and weaker people in positions of political power which in turn are beginning to embarrass old school Conservative Canadians like me. Actually before 9/11 I felt that our two governments/countries where fairly close in their thinking but since the Chretien/Liberal Federal government era I have been more and more embarrassed by the actions of this Federal Liberal government.
If not being proud of what your countries government is doing is unpatriotic then maybe I'm guilty as charged.

Camp Cook:

These guys really dislike Canada's economic and social policies venomously (we're at a major clinic in the U.S.) Maybe that's why they're in the U.S. now.

yes our government isn't fit to run a dairy queen. and now there's talk of more stupid laws regarding reloading! from what i remember it must be in a free standing dwelling that is at least 15 meters form other buildings.if you live in an apartment you can't or if houses are really close together you can't. i'm not 100 % sure on this, the guy to ask would be John Y Canuck. he posted a big thing about this on a canadian forum and it got a lot of folks riled up. iused to consider the quebec sepratists traitors, but every day they make more and more sense....

I was flying to Alaska with a fuel stop in Canada and called customs to ask if my handgun could pass through as we were not disembarking in B.C.
The official answer I got was " NO !!"  " Handguns are for killing people, not animals."    ......................end of story..................

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHh............. you found an other blind "LIBERAL" that doesn't know what actually is going on in the world or that is to close minded to understand that it is the person not the gun that kills people. With all of our new Canadian gun laws that have been forced upon us it hasn't been able to stop one killing where a gun was involved and most of the killings where guns are involved are gang related. These guns are not registered anyway.

3 years ago I met a nice single woman that grew up in a family that didn't hunt or own guns and she thought this way as well about guns. I married her 2 years ago. When she first met me she was totally afraid of guns and actually thought that I was a little bit off my rocker because I enjoy guns and shooting them. She told me just a few weeks ago that she was actually afraid of me when she first found out that I had guns. She now owns her own Ruger 77/44 bolt action s/s 44 mag rifle and has shot all of my rifles and handguns that don't have to much recoil for her. We actually had a shoot with her mom and dad when we came back from our honeymoon. My wife, her mom and dad both had a great time.

What it comes down to is that so many people have no experience with guns and thus fear them. They see movies and shows on TV that show guns as tools of the bad guys to kill people and figure that that is all guns are good for.

So don't blame ever Canadian for the closed minded, uneducated values  of some people thay just don't understand. Unfortunately our Government here is Liberal and thinks the same way.
