Dipping traps?
« on: September 19, 2004, 07:17:14 AM »
Do I have to wire brush traps that are rusty before I can dip them or will the dip penitrate the rust ? The traps have already been boiled, but I think I left them out to long and they have a good coat of rust. I had planned on just dying them with walnut hulls and than waxing. I got a quart of trap coat from my fur buyer and want to use it instead. Thanks for any information, Worm.

Worm, good dip will cover surface rust.I use a wire brush to take off the heavier rust.Make sure to use colemanfuel instead of gasoline.

Dipping traps

Thanks Tom. I wire brushed most of the traps, but I think I didn't mix the dip just right, to much gas. And thats another thing, I used premium gas. I used brown and it covered them alright, but I figured it would have been a little darker. I've got it in a 5 gallon bucket but have left the lid loose so the gas will evaporate a little to make it a little thicker than it was. Have you ever double or even triple dipped traps to get better coverage? Thanks again for the informatiom. Worm

Worm,I never use gas anymore, always coleman.I do not double dip, double dipping would be better, but then dogs and triggers must be scraped.I single dip--thus avoiding the need to do any scraping.

Double dipping

It doesn't bother me to have to scrape the dog or end of the triggers.  I like to tinker with my traps and that would qualify, I think. I've been thinking that I actually like the dying and waxing of traps the way I have been doing for the last 20 years. Easier isn't  always the best. Only 6 more weeks till opening day, can't wait.  Later, Worm.

dipping snares?
« Reply #5 on: September 29, 2004, 03:41:02 PM »
I know it seems I'm beating a dead horse, but has anyone used speed dip on snares with good results? Like I said before I mixed mine a little to thin so today while boiling my snares in baking soda I decided to dip a few in the speed dip. The snares I dipped had already been dulled in baking soda last year. Anyway it looks like it covered them really well, but I won't know how they operate until they have had time to dry. Let me know if it has worked  for you or not. Thanks, Worm.

Worm, after they are good and dry, work the lock back and forth a few times. That is about the only spot you may get a bit of dip build up.

Dipping traps?

I've dipped my snares before, too. As was mentioned, the white gas seems to do better than unleaded gasoline does.
Thinner was better for me also so that the cable didn't get too "gummy" and caused unnecessary drag against the lock during the slide.
this was more for "coloration" than anything else because the snares really aren't a rusting or protective issue for me as much as traps are that get buried in the soil or underwater for extended periods. I do reuse the locks after each catch, so adding life to the lock is a bonus when dipping or dyeing.

dipping snares

Glad to hear that I didn't trash the snares by dipping them. I got all my snares boiled last night and will dip them  today. I use the large relaxing washer locks on all my snares so they fall faster once triggered so I will make sure to slide the snare lock a few times to clean out the hole. I'm pretty sure I've had some refusals because the dull gray snare just wasn't blended in well enough. I try not to crowd the critters with guides so my snares don't get as much camo as they could. The brown speed dip ought to help a lot. Thanks, Worm.
