Savage 99E problem
« on: September 30, 2004, 06:21:26 PM »
I bought a Savage 99E at the gun show last weekend and shot it the first time today. Shoots great for a single shot. What I mean is I can't get any cartridges to go in to the rotary magazine.
I am trying to load it by pushing down on the cartridge like you do with a bolt action rifle.
 I guess I bought someone's problem.
If there is some secret to loading this gun please let me know. Other wise I guess I'll have to take it to a gun smith.

I owned a Savage 99 for years. The rotary magazine is quite different from the conventional vertical feed type. I remember that the cartridges needed to be fed by the middle of the case being pressed at a slightly sideways angle in the direction of rotation. It's kind of tricky until you get the hang of it after a few times. Good luck, I hope you don't really need a gunsmith. 8)

Texgun,
Sound like you may need to do a good cleaning (disassembly of the receiver).  Many times when a handiman tears into an m99 to fix a feed problem they end up with a rotary magazine that won't feed properly.  Make certain you find a good gunsmith who knows the m99 and its secrets!  The tension on the spool spring is critical.

The other possibility is that if you are using handloads, the OAL is critical for proper feeding and might be too long for the magazine.
