New to Encore
« on: October 01, 2004, 09:26:55 AM »
Hi everyone.  I've taken the plunge.  A friend of mine invited me deer hunting and I've got an SST Encore in .308 on the way.  I'm a lefty so I just couldn't find a bolt action that I liked well enough.  Came close to getting a LH Savage , but I just don't like the fit and finish.  I can't wait until 2005 when Tikka releases the T3's in lefty.

So I got an Encore.  I think it's going to be really nice for me.  Any pointers.  Any ideas for scopes or what to watch out for as far as mounting them.  I've been leaning toward a Leupold VXII 3-9x40, but the guy at the gun shop was trying to sell me a Weaver 2-10x38.  It's $100 less but a)I don't know the brand and b)I read a site that wasn't very impressed with Weaver's shock resistance.  Any suggestions.

Can't wait to shoot it... should get to me by Monday.

Your choice of the Leupold VXII 3-9x40 is just right. I just got another barrel for my Encore in 308 and put a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 on it with a Warne mount and rings. I shot the gun yesterday and was shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the first load I reloaded. (After sighting in of course.) I am going to work up a good load with 130 gr. bullets for Pronghorn.  :D

Do you have a link or part numbers for that mount and rings?  I hate buying stuff on the internet where sizing is pretty important.

Thanks

Got it today... went to the range and shot 25 rounds with open sights.  I definitly see this gun's potential.  I'm also quite pleased that none of the stuff I've seen people complain about in here are present in my example.  There is no play between the barrel and frame.  The trigger a little heavy, but crisp.  I'm sure after I break that in I'll be quite pleased with it.

Gotta order a scope though.
