New Ruger #1 45/70 Tropical in bound.
« on: September 20, 2004, 04:03:54 PM »
I had my local gun shop check for one today and the dealer still had two in stock.  They are the 45/70 Tropicals in stainless and laminated stock.
To start with I may take the 3x9 off my Knight and put it on the #1.
At least the Knight has fiber optic sights.

DonDick that sounds like one very nice rifle. I love the #1s. That will be a good close cover elk rifle. Probably be fine on moose as well. I bet you will eventually settle on a low power scope for it either fixed or variable. Something in the 1.5-4.5X range. Good luck with it. POW

POW, I agree on the scope and am giving that some thought now.

I put a Burris 2-7 compact on mine, seems to "fit" better than a full sized scope, doesn't overwhelm the rifle.

Don Dick, you're gonna like it!. Mine shoots very well, sometimes inside of 1/2" center to center. I also like a smaller, low powered scope. Mine wears a 4X Leupold and I sometimes think I need to go lower.

Don Dick,
I mounted a burris 4 power compact on mine and also installed a mercury coil in the butt which calmed her down a little. I wouldent take a Kings ransom for it. Shoots great with hot loads or light plinking loads. You made a good choice Sir. Have a good one.........Joe...........

I got my scope in today and mounted it up and used my Leupold bore sighter on it. Now I just need to burn some powder.  I have some factory
300 grain HP winchester ammo to sight in with.  Any suggestions on loads with the 300 grain hp for whitetail.  I hunt in Pa. and shots are with in 50 yards most of the time.

Don,
I use 50 Gr of IMR 4198, CCI 200 primers and Hornaday 300 Gr HPs in mine.  That'll give you about 2100 FPS without a lot of recoil and is very accurate in my rifle.  Never had to use a second shot on a whitetail or hog.

Thanks 50 Calshtr,  IMR 4198 is mentioned in a couple of the reloading manuels I have as one of the better powders for the 45/70.  I do have
a question on the CCI vs Winchester primers does it make that much of a difference?

Don, I've been hunting the "Scotia Barrens" here in Centre County with a NEF 45/70 for 14 years now, and have found out that those 300 grain JHP's shouldn't go much over 1800 fps for close range shooting or you end up with a lot of bloodshot meat.  The factorystuff actually clocks(or used to) around 1650 fps and I killed a couple of deer with those loads(WInchester) , and they died as quickly at the ranges I was shooting(25-50 yds)as the high end loads I tried later(51.2 grs of IMR 4198 with a 300 grain JHP @ 2173fps) with a lot less meat damage.  I don't much fancy dragging out a bunch of mangled, bloody meat like them .270 boys do back here.  Finally settled down at 42.5 grs of IMR 4198 for around 1840 fps.  All you need in these thick PA woods.  This year I've switched to the Speer 400 gr FN behind 44 gr of Reloader 7 for around 1750 fps....Just for a change.  Great woods cartridge, it is.  Keep in mind that while 300 grs might be a "light" bullet for the 45, it's packing a lot more mass than what those 243/25-06 etc folks are shooting.

Joel, I am from Clinton cty, born in Lock Haven, Pa.   Moved away to go to college and have lived in Kentucky and Tn since.  I try to go back all I can to hunt.  Thanks for the responce.

Your right about the 270, of all the deer I have killed with rifles, the 270 with 130 grain bullets blew up the most meat.  I just could not believe it.
