Opening day
« on: October 03, 2004, 03:33:59 AM »
Well I did not get to go Saturday but got out this morning. Seen a doe I could have taken at 20 yrds but let her walk as the season is to early for me to take a doe as yet. With the season just starting I am in no hurry and will wait awhile to put a doe in the freg. Of course if she was a HUGE DOE...well thats another matter

Gary L.,
I went yesterday, and the weather was great here in the southern part of the buckeye state. Sat through the thunderstorm (no lightning close to me though, or I would have abandoned the tree stand quickly) and saw no deer   I did have a coyote howl very close to me, so I'll take a predator call and see if I can coax him out sometime soon. Also saw a gray squirrel get attacked at my feeder. He tried to push the chipmunks out and they ganged up on him. One would get his attention, and another would blindside him. He finally ran away. Went back yesterday evening, but again weather had them bedded tight. Went out this morning and found my treestand blind had broken a support rod and looked something like a landing craft had hit a tree  :-D  I got in the stand to await good light to see if I could fix it and a HUGE buck walked within 40 or 50 yards of the stand. Not enough light to get a good look at his rack or count tines, but he was big bodied and I'd take him withought a second thought if he came within range. A lot of meat on his frame! Well, he didn't offer a shot, and I spent most of the morning (after it was full light, and I didn't think any more deer were moving) trying to fix the blind, then removing it finally. Didn't really need it anyway, but a friend gave it to me and thought I should put it on the stand. I'm headed back out this evening, might even get to see some deer for a change.

Gary L.,
The squirrel story got even funnier tonight. I was back in the stand this evening and the squirrel was back, but wiser! He would grab a piece of corn and then sit with his backside tightly against the "stumpfeeder" while he ate, so he could keep a watch for any chipmunk attacks
He finally got a meal!

Yes to both questions. Not sure how long the hunting deer over bait has been legal, but it's been quite a few years. The Sunday hunting has only been legal for two or three years now.
Turkey season opens next weekend, and hunting them near a bait station is a big NO though.
