Finally got some ammo loaded for my new .500 Smith
« on: November 25, 2004, 04:40:47 AM »
I really wasn`t counting on deer hunting with my new .500 this year but I got some ammo loaded this morn, 350 grn. bullets at about 1,875 fps. according to the book. Stepped out the back door and fired a cylinder load at a rock, about 12 in. in dia. at about 135 yrds. Hit the thing 3 out of the 5 shots and the other 2 were right there, all kill shots on a deer. I think I`m in love again. Recoil is alot milder than I thought it would be too. I think it will get alot worse when I load up some of the 440 grn. bullets I got, but I`ll use the .350 grners. to hunt deer with if I carry it, and the way it shoots I don`t think I`ll be able to leave it home.

You will notice a difference when you step up to the 440 gr. I have loaded some 575 gr. cast bullets with gas checks and they rock you. I am going on a Bear hunt in Maine next October that I booked, and I am going to use my BFR 500Mag with 370 gr. cast bullets with gas checks going about 1850 fps. I can wait.

Red Hawk,
Just had to find out for myself. I loaded up some of the 440 grn. hard cast gas checked bullets to max. load and fired a cylinder full. You definately know when they go off, but I don`t think that they are quite as bad as the 300 grn. loads I have when fired in my .454 Ruger. I didn`t get them loaded till after dark so I don`t kow where they are shooting in compairsion to the 350`s, but I may play with it alittle tommrow.

The 440 gr. in my 500MAG have a lot more recoil than my Super Redhawk in 454 Casull with 300 gr. bullets. My Super Redhawk has a 3 inch barrel.  :D
