Hi!
I'm taking one of those several day bus tours with my mom to New York City next week. While it is common knowledge that New York City forbids it's residents and visitors self protection via firearms, is it permissable to carry something like pepper spray?
Anyone know or have an idea where I can find such information?

Just an idea. You might try NYPD. May end up being a lengthy phone call. Or maybe NYC has a website. And with the convention in town, there may be some special precautions in place.

Looks like a lot of people crowded up in a small place. Have a good and safe trip. Think I'll stay in the Ozarks.

Deb, I do not live in the city, but not far from it.
You may not bring anything with you that could be construed as a weapon, more for your safety than anything else. The pepper spray I believe is actually illegal for you to have, knives, while legal are unadvisable.
As we all know, and according to the powers that be, the NYC cops can protect city residents from all crimes large and small.
As a personal tip, travel in groups of two minimum, make sure someone knows where you are and are going at all times, and stay out of known crime areas, (The cops will be more than happy to tell you where to stay away from).
Believe it or not, most of the city is fun and essentially crime free.
There are lots of sites to see and plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, stores, etc.

   Can't help you there Deb....I live on the other end of the state about 60 miles further from the "big apple" than is Martinsburg WV..

  A couple years ago at a county fair, I spoke to a deputy sheriff about just that situation.
  He explained that they , (our sheriffs dept) consider the law pertaining to mace etc. is just to be able to prosecute the ones that misuse same.
   He said that especially where women and the aged are concerned, probably noone would even know if they had any mace unless they HAD to use it.
   In that situation, they would be glad they had the protection...and he indicated that if itr was a self-defense situation, little would be done over the possession.
   From what I understand, pepper spray is legal, at least around here...

   Following MSP's advice, I would like to offer some beautiful places to visit in NY state:

  1) The Finger Lakes...especially now, late summer, early fall...
  Grape harvest is going on, and if you have a taste for fine wine ( I don't), some of the best in the world, I am told ,is made here.
    The lakes and scenery are beautiful. Ithaca and Geneva are nice, small , cities that have most anything one would want.

   2) The Adirondacks; winter or summer...always beautiful
  Lake Placid, lumber museum etc. picturesque small towns. Much local lore and color...

 3) Leatherstocking country:

    The land of "The Last of the Mohicans", and the setting for many James Fenimore Cooper's writings; hence the term "Leatherstocking".
    Baseball hall of fame, the Farmer's museum (with the "Cardiff Giant")
both on the shores of Lake Glimmer Glass, thne home of "The Deerslayer".

   4) The Southern Tier:

    Follow the route of I-86 (old rt. 17) from about at Livingston Manor west. My experience tells me that the "Big Apple" attitude sometimes extends as far as Livingston Manor.
  Travelling I-86 is a joy for sightseers, especially with fall colors coming on. Suggestions...Glass museum at Corning, Glen Curtiss air museum at Hammondsport.
 Enter the "enchanted Mountains" area around Olean (my part of the state).
   The people in the western region of the state (outside the big cities) with their friendliness and traditional values are much like "heartland" America.

    Side tours from I-86: at Painted Post, take a side tour on rt 417  to the tiny hamlet of Woodhull and buy some of the finest cheddar cheese in the world . Golden Age cheddar beats all of the rest ( my opinion)  that I have tried....and I am from a family of "cheddar chasers". Most of the milk in Golden Age cheese is from Amish farms.
   
At places like Woodhull,
 Belvedere and Randolph tours of Amish country are always interesting.
 Recommend the Randolph, Leon, Conewango valley area.
   Salamanca, on the reservation...Seneca Nation museum, and if is "your cup of tea"( not mine), The new Casino (on I-86)....cheap gas, tobacco and booze.

    Chautauqua...the institution and the lake that has summer sports and great ice fishing.
   Rt 60 north will take you to Lily Dale a whole village dedicated to  the "spiritualist" experience. Lily Dale is called the world center of Spiritualism....every home has a "medium".
    To be bruitally frank, as a Born-again Christian, I refer to the place as "Silly Dale"....but for those interested, it may be enjoyable.


   There are many other places in NY State that are highly interesting; lakes George & Champlain, Forts Ticonderoga, Niagara and many more.

     All these things taken together, overlaid with much History from the French & Indian war, and the Revolution....makes for interesting travel,
OUTSIDE the Big Apple..

    No worry about hurricanes either!

If I remember correctly Deb,, Pepper spray is compleatly legal in all states because it isnt CHEMICAL based and there have been very few if any instances of death following its use..Whereas Chemical MASE there has been instances of what is called lung freeze from its use and also blindness...As long as it is PEPPER spray and not mase I would feel it is ok to carry...BUT just keep it handy but out of site Just to be on the safe side

Deb, It used to be that without a permit carrying Mace, in NY and CA, was a felony. Dont know if the law is still on the books, but would bet it is. Take Pepper spray or a can of Hair spray.

I have read that EASY OFF oven cleaner is very effective....of course, if you have to use it, you may have some explaining to do as to why you are carrying it.
   But if you are in the position of "post usage"....you will still be glad you had it.
  Incidentally, if you (heavens forbid) live in a "gun free" area, a can of Easy Off would be a good thing for the little woman to have handy to reach..like a fire extinguisher.

I don't think oven cleaner would be a very good thing to carry around.  Unless Easy Off is different than the oven cleaners I am familiar with, it is caustic and if you get it in your eyes, you will most likely do some very serious damage.  

In a panic situation it would be very easy to end up spraying yourself, or spraying into the wind and having the mist come back into your face.  I'm sure if one does some research, there is something better than oven cleaner to carry for personal defense.

   Perhaps if it is available in those "finger groove" type cans that one can't hold in a wrong direction....

Is anyone actively promoting a campaign to expell The Five Boroughs from the USA , including the UN and building a 20' tall chain link fence topped with razor wire around it, then posting guards with orders to shoot to kill anyone who does not come out with their hands up and in their underwear?
