I am looking into purchasing my first mil spec but I am looking for something in a 30-06 or .270. The gun will be used for target shooting and hunting. Any recommendations?

Well, the best Milsurp in .30-06 is the 03A3 Springfield. Never heard of a military rifle in .270 but nothing would surprise me. Just when I said there's no such thing somebody would pull somehing like, "Yeah, a couple of Marine snipers used their own money to buy a couple of model 70's in 270 when hey were in Beruit in the 80's" out of their butt.

Like Jack, I've never heard of a military .270. With .30-06 your choices are a little better. There's the aforementioned Springfield 1903-A3, the earlier Springfield 1903, the Enfield P17 (I'd really like to get one of these), and the M1 Garand. I'm sure there are some others but those are the ones that spring to mind. The 7.5mm Japanese Arisaka can be easily reamed out to .30-06 as well.

Well for a "270" or "30-06" Id go with the Saiga "100" hunter its an AK47 design(exact copy) in a sporter version. I own the saiga synthetic in 308win. and they are awesome!! These little light weight semi-auto rifles are as good as any out there and the $300 price tag on the synthetic you can't beat the russian quality. They have chromed lined barrels and gas systems too. And they spit out the 308 round like an AK spits out the 7.62x39 too jus tas fast. The hunter version is priced a little higher anf will be here in the US in the spring of '05. Thats what i'm waiting for now a saiga 100 in 30-06 and 270 to play with too. Yup I jumped off the surplus ship for the affordable new saiga's there really AK47's but don't tell everyone!!! There the best bang for the buck buy right now. With the rising costs of surplus guns I went for the saiga's so i can hammer them without the worry of hurting them in the woods too. BigBill

I like real wood stocks on my military surplus guns but on my saiga's its synthetic stocks for all weather hunting/shooting.

I heard the 16" barreled 308 is as accurate as the 22" barreled 308 so its up to you if anyone wants a 308 synthetic saiga. I own both now I may get scoped(22") and the other(16") is for tree stand hunting because its so short and you can swing it around so easy too.
