.375 winchester vs. .375 jdj
« on: October 06, 2004, 11:24:49 AM »
Hello,  I am new to the forum and this is my first question.  I am considering buying a carbine barrel for my G2.  The .375 Winchester and .375 jdj are both appealing to me.  I have not been able to find any significant advantage with the .375 jdj.  Primary prey will be whitetail with a possibility for moose.  I will be most likely using factory ammo, at least at first.  Any opinions are welcome.  Thanks, and happy hunting!

I have been thinking about this myself.  From what I can tell, the JDJ round gives you 375 Win RIFLE performance in a PISTOL length barrel.  How they would compare with both of them from a rifle barrel I'm not sure.  I'm guessing the deer or moose wouldn't know the difference.  The 375 JDJ might extend your range by about 50yds I would guess.  Personally, I have been leaning toward the 375 Win.  Hopefully someone who has experience with this cartridge will shed a little light.

375 Win vs 375 JDJ

I gave up on trying to buy a 375win carbine barrel. The custom shop does sell them for about $250 + 3-4 month wait. I ended up getting a 375 JDJ barrel for $189. Dies from SSK for $70. Just waiting for brass to arrive and I can start load testing. The loads SSK sent said I can get 2518 FPS with 225 Hornady SP and Varget powder. My Hornady book says 375 Win will get 2200 FPS with 220 Hornady FP. Is 300 FPS worth it to buy a 375 JDJ? It is in my book.

You may also want to check the availibility of factory ammo for either one. I rarely see .375 Win ammo around these parts and have never seen .375 JDJ ammo. I think I would seriously consider loading your own because I don't believe either one of them will be easy to find loaded ammo for.

Thanks for the insight folks.  I'm also considering the .45-70 as you may have seen my question regarding that fine cartridge.  I know that factory ammo for that is readily available and that cartridge offers similar performance to the .375's.

Actually, Bass Pro Shops does provide the TC line of .375JDJ ammo (so I guess they ain't so scarce). So...there's one source of ammo right there if ya have a hard time finding the stuff!  :D

At least they list it with items you can order.........My point is that you can't go run to the store and buy a box. For the guy who doesn't load his own this can be a huge problem and I have yet to see JDJ ammo on any store shelf and only a choosen few listed mail order houses.

But still can get 375 Win. over the counter. I have a 12" 375 Win. Hunter barrel. It`s one of the barrels, I will never get rid of. It kicks like a 44 Mag. but has range.
