1892 Rossi 45cal questions....??
« on: September 03, 2004, 10:38:29 AM »
Howdy all. I have a Rossi with a 24" octagon barrel in 45colt. Except for two problems it shoots and functions pretty good.
Problem one...closing the lever to chamber a round is pretty smooth until the last little bit--seems the extractor is pretty stout and takes much effort to snap over the case rim. Or at least that's what I think.
Problem two....spent brass has a decided bulge just above the head and rim of the case and on one side. The warmer the handload the more and greater the bulge. This bulge is going to limit brass life and is not completely remedied by the resizing die since its so close to the base of the case.
Any advice on these Rossi quirks is appreciated.

The hard lever closing is probably due to a stiff ejector spring. There is a kit that supplies a lighter one that makes quite a difference.

The bulged cases sounds like an oversized chamber. That's going to be tough to fix.

The extractor spring is an easy fix, Brownels carries the Lee Gunslinger kit fer Rossi and it's well worth the money!!!

The bulged case thing is more difficult. Two answers: Have a smith shorten the barrel and rechamber, which is going to require shortening the mag tube. Or have it rebarreled. If the gun is still under warrentee I'd return it. That bulged case thing is a sign that case failure is an imminant possibilty, which could be catastrophic!  :(

I have had no problems with bulged cases in mine. Thats not a good thing
I would try and get Rossi to fix it first.

Maybe you need to try diferent ammo cases. My Rossi bulges WW and REM cases all the way around. I have been using PMC Cowboy loads and the cases are not bulged out. Maybe the PMC cases are harder and thicker than the WW and REM cases. Try using the PMC Cowboy Ammo before sending the gun off. This might be the ticket you need.
