My local gunshop got in a very clean 336 in 35 Remington the other day. It is a pre-crossbolt model and is priced at $285. Is this a good buy on nice 35? I'm tempted to get it, I've wanted a 35 Rem. for a long time.

Conditions may be different, but I recently had my choice of two 336 35 rems at a local gun show for $220.

you dont specify what age the gun is or what barrel lenght.. have the gun shop show you the model in the gun book and grade it for you.. you probably wont know what exactly hes talking about but the price is pretty well laid out in a well accepted book. im not sure the name of the right book right now, but they vary some.. my new book says 25 on the front and its blue /silver is the one you should go by.. if its the right model its worth what you say, if its not its worth less.. the older one i have is a 336a and has a 24 inch barrel,and it is worth if i remember right in the 275 range or even more.. .. if its newer it may not.. the gun shop needs to show and accounting for his pricing, if he doesnt know or cant show you id be suspect. if its in very good condition and it hasnt been shortend on either end and has origanal parts/sights, and screws are not buggered and its pleasing to you youll be very impressed with a 336 in 35 rem.. and the extra 50 dollars will be soon forgoten.. good luck dave..

Prices on guns vary a LOT by area. So it's really hard to say if that's a good or not so good price in your area. I picked up one from an estate sale 2-3 years back for $180. The folks conducting the sale put a pretty bad gouge in the stock but otherwise it is in excellent condition and I think was made in the 50s but forget now which year. '54 I think.

I also bought another a few months back made in '79 in near mint condition with a Weaver base and Simmons (POS) scope on it in Weaver rings. Tossed the POS Simmons and added a Bushnell Banner 1-5-5 scope on it. I now have one with Williams peep rear and firesight front and one scoped. I paid $250 total out the door on the second.

Personally I'd consider one of the newer crossbolt safety models to be worth less than an older model like those I have. Not all might agree.

I think that is about what they sell for new at Wal mart. I bought one last year used it does have the CBS, but I got it for $220.00 with dies, 220 cases, 1 box of federal ammo, and several boxes of bullets. But like Gray Beard said, prices vary alot depending where you are. I think I would check around and see what the same rifles are selling for.

TNRifleman, According to the blue book of gun values, 24th edition. A pre-safety 336 would retail at: RC model 98% $275.00, 95% $200.00 . There are other models that are worth more and some worth less. reagin also affects price. If you are not buying to re-sell, and you like the gun, I would not worry to much if you pay a few dollars more than the book value. Inflation will catch up in time and you will be saying look at this old marlin I bought 20 years ago for only XXX$. Regards, Byron
