LAST RESTING PLACE.........
« on: October 27, 2004, 05:56:43 PM »
Several years have passed since that harsh moment when she was expelled from the warm comfort of her mothers body and dropped to the cold earth. Snow still capped the distant peaks of the Wind River Mountains as she took her first shakey steps. Protected by her mother she gained strength as she grew that first year.

Seasons slipped by and she was still alive after the chilling cold of the high plains winter  Spring came and with it the lush vegetation that turned her body from child to women. Summer slipped by and the hint of the approac hing rut stirred strange sensations in her young body. He was a masterful beast, curving black horns towered over his dark face and she was drawn to him by some mystical force. Shudders went through her body as he planted his seed.

Months later she danced with her first child, they raced over the sage covered hills taking joy from just being there in this endless passing of time......more time passed, more fawns raised to maturity, some not....

She was older now and with no fawn to nurrish this season she rested in the afternoon sun on a sage covered slope not far from a refreshing water hole. Life on the high plains had been good.

Her eyes were heavy as she relaxed near the spot where she had been born. In her drowsy state she missed the approacing danger, the shinny machine stopping accross the small yalley. The light breeze failed to bring the sent of her mortal enemy her way as the beast that walked on two legs exited the smelly machine. She failed to notice the gleam of sun off metal and never heard the blast that delivered the fatal blow.

In an instant her mortal body lay dead amongst the sage and soil that had given her life. She could not see the two legged beast as he climbed the small hill to her last resting place. With a gentel hand he place a bit of sage under her head, placed the weapon that brought her quick death on her side. He then used a tool to capture the image of her resting in eternal sleep.......

I knelt by her side, placed my finger where the bullet had entered, a near perfect shot from the 300 Savage pistol I had named the beast. The range was 275 yards, point blank range for the G2......

Some two weeks have passed and her flesh has nurrished my body. At each bite I honner her and the millions of years of evolution that lead to our  meeting during this years antelope hunt.........

Good to hear about your hunt. Amazing how the hunt comes back to you when your enjoying the meat the animal provided. I once had God literally put a deer in my lap when I first got married and the checking account was low. I don't think we would have financially made it without that deer. We ate off of it for two months until we got caught up. This was the only legal deer I saw at this place in three years and it happen to come at EXACTLY the right time. As the good book says, "The Lord knows what you need even before you ask him".

What did "point blank with the G2..." mean?

Several years ago I purchased the 300 Savage barrel from Bullberry Gun Works. Some load testing at the time showed I could reach 2800 fps from the 18 inch barrel when loaded with RL-12 and Nosler 125 grain Ballistic Tips.

In preparing for this years doe antelope hunt I simply dug out the old reloading records and put together 50 rounds with the small batch of RL-12 I still had on the shelf. Not wanting to overstress one of my original Contender frames I decided to purchase a new G2 pistol frame and give it a try.

My PACT chronograph showed the load was still going 2800 fps and still very accurate. When sighted in just over 3" high at 100 yards the computer shows the bullet only 1.82 inches low at 275 yards....thus leading to my comment of "point blank (range)."

When I brought the G2 frame home I discovered the serial number was XX666 so from now on when fitted with the 300 barrel it will be known as "The Beast"........
