I recently had some outstanding accuracy at the range with the Hornady 385 grain HP lead conical. Have any of you used this conical on game ? How did it perform for you ?

It is all I use in my T/C Hawkens over 90g of black powder. I have taken a bunch of deer with that bullet and none have taken more then a few steps. Most have dropped right in their tracks.

Sorry,haven't shot any,.........but would sure like to hear more about your success at the range with those 385gr Great Plains. Been wanting to try some.

What brand & how much powder was your best load?
What range did ya shoot at and with/wo scope?
What lube was used and how did they load?
How was your group size and what gun do you shoot?

Primer - I have always been a flintlock and RB shooter. This year I decidedd to buy an in-line to hunt our PA early season and in NY. I was looking for an economical firearm and bought the NEF Sidekick SS with the 26 inch barrel. I mounted an older Redfield 3-9X scope and set out to the range to give it a try. My shooting during this range trip was at 50 yards. I shot the TC Maxi Huinters and they were OK. I loaded the 385 grain Great Plains bullet over 85 grains of Pyrodex P. My first three shots formed a group that I covered with a penny. I swabbed between shots. To say that I was impressed would be an understatment. The bullets are prelubed and seat with not too much effort. I don't think I will bother looking for other bullets. I wanted to shoot a heavy conical and this will sure fit the bill. I sighted in 2 inches high at 50 yards and I'm dead on at 100 yards. Hope this helps.

Rupe/PA, It helps a lot! Great performance indeed. This info will go into my shooting (muzzleloader) notebook. :grin:

I'll pick up some this week and give them a try in my Huntsman,also fitted with 3-9x scope. Just love shooting that gun with 777 ffg.
Also REALLY enjoy my T/C sidelocks. Been playing with them all summer and can't seem to leave them alone,.. but of course they have open sights, sooo 50 to 100yds is pretty much my limit. My eyes aren't what they used to be. :cry:

p.s. Haven't got up the nerve yet to go the flint route,but very-very close.
Thinking about building one from the many great package offerings. Watched a fellow shooter with one and was amazed at the FAST lock time!

Primer - Good luck with the bullets. Flintlocks are addictive. I shoot a TVM Jaegr in 54 cal. and a Jackie Brown in 20 ga. (62 cal.). A good lock, well tuned and maintained is about as fast as any in-line. Get one or build one and you will enjoy it.

Here's a pic of a Grain Plains next to 240g .44 cal bullet I use in my Huntsman. Sorta makes the .44 bullet look a little whimpy.
