big bore scope
« on: July 11, 2008, 09:08:33 AM »
Anybody know of a good scope with 5-6" of eye relief that would handle a .458 lott?  Doesn't have to be super powerful magnification, mostly looking for the eye relief, cause I don't want to take a chance scoping the hell out of myself with the lott.

As I have been looking, I was thinkng maybe the Nikon omega, black powder scope with the BDC reticle, I believe it would handle the recoil, and also be setup for the ranges I am looking for (75-300yards, at the VERY most)

I'm sure there are others, but with the recoil and dependency needed on DG, which is what I presume your use of the Lott, I'd only go with one scope.  Leupold 1.5X5 Vari X III or better.  I know and realize other brands are good, reliable, optics but I've too much confidence with Leupold compared to others.  The last thing a hunter needs is lack of 100% confidence in his chosen equipment for DG.  I'm sure you could use different scopes all with the same reliability, but I've never had a Leupold that failed in over 40 years including a sunken rifle to a depth of 75' for over a week.  The Leupold 1x4 Vari X I heavy duplex when dried was just as clear and operated flawlessly as the day it was put on the rifle.  I never even sent it back to the factory for refurbishing and it still working excellently 20 years after the immersion.  The eye relief you require is a bit long but a scout model would work fine.  I've used a standard 1.5x5 on a Lott without any problems with eye ringing and plenty of eye relief to spare.  But it isn't 5-6", more like 4 1/4".

I put the Safari Burris 1 3/4 X 5 X 30 on my 458 Lott. It is a fine scope.

I have the same Scope on my 416.

I suggest looking at the specs for the Leupold 2.5X Compact. I think the actual magnification is something like 2.2x. I have one on two guns. One is a Thompson Center TCR with a 10-ga mag barrel (turkey tube) and the other is a Thompson Center TCR with a barrel in .50-140 Sharps (575-grain bullets at 1600 to 1800 fps). Its optimum eye relief may be 4 inches or so, but I think one gets almost full field of veiw at 6 inches. - DON

I have a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott.  Leupolds VX I 2-7X scope in Talley QD rings works well with 350 gr. bullets.  With 500 gr. bullets, the Leupold scope doesn't have an adequate range of adjustment.  With the heavier bullets, I use a Nightforce 2.5-10X scope.  Both scopes, by the way, have adequate enough eye relief that my forehead has never suffered even when shooting off the bench.

Well if it was me and I was actually planing an African trip then I would looking at :-

Schmidt & Bender
Pecar Berlin
Khales
Zeiss

They all make dangerous game scopes and have done so for years. Because I only play with my 458 on the range and budget is too limited to consider an African trip I make do with an old Weaver K1.5 Steel-Lite 11 scope with tapered post and cross bar reticle.

Well the scope might have to take a back burner on this one.. decided to spend some money on the muzzle brake first, getting the Alaska magnum recoil brake from Wild West Guns in Anchorage, looks to be a good one.

Am also going to sportsmans warehouse while in anchorage, so we will see if I need to work overtime next week.  ;D

I'm not sure Nikons BDC would correlate with the black powder charges?
