How many of you use a sling in the loop shooting method or any other steadying manner. I have only used the so-called hasty sling and would like to try the alternative better methods.

Anyone recommend a choice of sling/technique?

You can use a rifle sling, but it takes a while to don it and adjust it for shooting. I can't think of too many hunting situations where it is practical. The hasty sling is almost as good.

I've used the loop sling on the range for 20+ years but on my "field" guns I've adopted the CW or Ching slings. Briefly, that's a regular front sling swivel and another swivel just forward of the magwell or floorplate. The Ching setup also uses a third swivel where a regular rear swivel goes under the butt.

Running a sling from the front swivel to the "middle" swivel allows you to loop up like a loop sling without all the contortions and time required in tying the sling to your arm. Sometimes it's called the British Hasty Sling, or at least it was 20 years ago.

Note that you can do a similar thing by unhooking the rear sling swivel and rehook it thru the front swivel. This makes a nice loop for your bicep. It does take some getting used to, and you will probably have to adjust the length.

I typically use Uncle Mike utility slings on my rifles (1" nylon strap). They work good and are cheap. :wink:

I've always used a regular 1 1/4" military leather sling. If you adjust it correctly, and use the leather slides, you don't have to disconnect the rear swivel. In the field, or if you just plain don't feel like screwing with it, you can just wrap your arm in it once, and you have a pretty firm platform.

I recently picked up a rubber like sling, but haven't tried it yet. It's made from some kind of super wizzy gizzy rubberish material that isn't ever supposed to crack, and will allegedly support the weight of a whole aircraft carrier group...or something like that. :grin: There doesn't seem to be much give to it, and it seems to provide a pretty solid platform. But like I said, I haven't had a chance to actually shoot with it yet. It's made more for carrying the rifle, but has adjustments to use it to shoot with too. I'll bet it doesn't get nearly as heavy when wet as my leather military types do.

Latigo sling by Brownells is the sling to buy. It wont mark your gun and you can fit it to your rifle, it looks good too, and in many colors of leather. You can adjust it in 2 seconds and it will be much tighter than a hasty, IIIII promise. I sound like I,m a Brownell's salesman. t :wink:

for LH shooter...sorry...its the way I think...
RH inserts between sling and rifle, then pass hand under the sling and come up and grab forend...sling should be adjusted to be tight in this position...

I know about the hasty sling...need to learn the loop sling with a military style sling. Is the Latigo Sling a military style that the loop sling is workable with?
