Haven't posted in a while, but it is good to see all the same (and new people) posting.

I was wondering if someone cold help me out with coon lure. Last year I tried sardines but didn't have much luck. I thought it would be a good bait, but either I was doing something wrong or the coon didn't like them. Has anyone had success with sardines? Can someone recommend a good lure that would work in all kinds of weather? I was told that marshmellows are good bait. Is this true?

Some 'coons respond better to fish baits and some to sweet smelling things like marshmellows, honey, molasses, etc. This is how good lures were developed by the makers, putting a little of everything into the formulation so as to appeal to any passing coon. For example, mix some honey, marshmellows and sardines together and one has increased the chances of success. I have found through experimentation that the more ingredients added to any lure, the better animal response. Good luck! Ace

Asa has a very good coon lure but watch out if your setting a water line. The rats love it as well.

When chasing coon,I gang set.I do use fish oil,but spike it up with shellfish oil.
When baiting,I use shellfish bait,or fish type bait on one pocket and a sweet smell on the second---give them a choice.
I have never used sardines,most fish baits I now use are commercially prepared.When I was able to catch smelt ib the spring,I had very good luck with them for coon and mink.Also don't pass up a piece of muskrat in your pocket set for coon and mink.
Marshmallows are more of a summertime,adc bait---when fur trapping,I want something that is able to stand colder temps and reach out to those coon.
Asa's Muskrat lure is also a sweet smell coon can't pass on.

Sardines area fine Coon bait. Coons love them!
I use Jack mackrell however as its cheaper. A 16oz can of Mackrell will bait
eight traps. The empty can is good for a bait too!

Should you let meat based baits render, for example if you use muskrat meat? Or should the bait be more of a fresh meat (only slightly tainted) type? Or does it matter? My target will be coon, but I would also like to appeal to any mink in the area. Thanks TH.

I suppopse this is a matter of wide opinion but I prefer meat/fish baits be tainted for all animals except mink. Ace :grin:

I try to match the hatch so to speak. If I'm trapping along a corn field I will use a corn based bait or lure. If along a creek or river I use a fish type bait. I have combined to two into a really good bait. 1 can jack mackeral and 1 can of cream corn works real well in the river bottoms around here. Worm

When using muskrat for bait,I use it as fresh as possible.With advancing mink prices,I don't want to miss any of them.
I do miss a few coon at pockets,I set right up tight to the hole.This keeps me from missing mink,but it will cause one to miss some coon.

AH coon lure there are many things i have had success with I like using sardines but i have also used tuna, canned catfood, marshmellows (work good too), Shrimp (caught MANY on this), and our own little mix of vanilla marshmallow paste and marichino cherries that mix tastes mighty good too for a hungry trapper on the line :grin:

tinfoil balls put in with bait work just hope this helps

Got one of at least two with Peanut Butter and Jelly on a piece of bread this am,the fish never did it for me.

I like Worms post. I also bait depending on where I am making a set. I figure if a coon is by water, he's there for seafood. By corn fields, I use something sweet like marshmallows with some strong, sweet liquid on it. Sardines do work well, but it also pulls in skunks and grinners. Thumper.

I've had the best sucess with fresh fish for coon. Chunks or ground up carp, suckers, sheephead, minnows. This year I'll be using the fresh fish but will also be trying fish oil with coon lure mixed in. About a quart of fish oil with 2 oz. of lure. I'll let ya know how it works in about three weeks. Can't wait.
