.370 Federal/Sako
« on: February 03, 2008, 01:15:14 PM »
Shooting Times magazine contains an article about the 9.3 mm cartridges and had a reference to a new round, the .370 Fedearal/Sako.  it is the Americanized version of the European 9.3x66mm, a 9.3 mm round based on the 30-06 case.  Will fit in 30-06 action but offers an additional 150 fps over the existing 9.3x62.  Is already on the market in Europe as the 9.3x66.  Interesting idea.
Here's a link for more information.

Follow up:

The official name of the 9.3x66 mm American version is .370 Sako Magnum as loaded by Federal Ctg. Co with a 286 grain Nosler partitions and Barnes TSX at MV of 2,550 fps.

According to the Federal website, this is a 30-06 necked up to .366" even though it's called a "magnum".  Well it's a necked up 30-06, not a magnum, which, in my view, is a good thing.

Wonder if that's the round that I saw mentioned in G&A magazine today as something brand new that Craig Boddington's going to be covering on an upcoming segment of G&A TV?  Shoot, it might have already run (I don't have cable and go weeks without turning the damn thing on).

Whatever, it sounds kind of cool but I believe I read about it somewhere a year or so ago.  And I read about the 9.3x64 Brenneke many years ago, which was introduced sometime between WWI and WWII if I'm not mistaken.  I'll have to check the library to see if the new Sako bests it.  -WSJones

The 9.3x64 is a "magnum" but with an unbelted case.  It's kind of like an unbelted .358 Norma OR .338 Win Mag.  necked up to .366".

The new .370 Sako "Magnum" is not really a "magnum" at all, but merely a necked up 30-06 case.  It's also 3 mm longer as well.

Right.  Magnum or "magnum" or whatever, you're right about it being an unbelted magnum.   However it is only 1mm longer than a 30-06 and could (probably was originally) be made on a standard length Mauser action.  Just like the 366 Sako!  -WSJones
