Ease of Cleaning - Omega with 777 VS Savage Smokeless
« on: October 20, 2004, 05:28:54 AM »
I just a little curious about what would be an easier rifle to clean: A TC Omega using Hodgdon 777 or a Savage Smokeless ML?

Omega owners, what is involved in cleaning the Omega? About how long does it take you?

Savage owners, same questions.

Also, which would you say is the better firearm?

In My Honest Opinion, triple 7 (777) is a bear to clean!
I think it's a lot worse than Pyrodex and that's why I've switched back!

I would think the savage smokeless would be the same as cleaning any of the "centerfire rifles", with the exception of removing the breach plug!

Cleaning Triple Se7en is a breeze. I use the pellets. Just use hot water. I have never had any problem.

I can't imagine a ML that is any easier to clean than my Omega.  It is considerably easier to clean than the Black Diamond that I previously owned.  I swab the T7 out of the barrel between shots anyway, so the barrel never gets too bad in the first place.  When I get the gun home, I clean the breech plug in soapy water.  I run a couple of patches down the barrel that have been dipped in soapy water, then dry it with a couple dry patches.  Then I repeat that process with Butch's Bore Shine, then a patch soaked with RemOil.  Grease the plug threads and reinstall and that's about it.  Before shooting, I run a patch of Butch's Bore Shine again to rid the barrel of the oil, then a couple dry patches.  The gun is then ready to shoot.  Pretty simple and staightforward.  I have no experience with the Savage ML.

If cleaning is a big problem with you I would recommend that you find some Black Mag3 powder. It leaves almost no fouling and the claim is that it is non-corrosive so cleaning is simple and not critical that it be done immediately after shooting. I just shot some and the clean up with my Omega was about as simple as it gets. Remove breechplug run a couple of wet patches and then a couple of dry ones. Oil the bore. Soak the breechplug in soapy water and rinse and dry. I leave my breechplug out until I am ready to shoot again. Other synthetics are similar but have a little more fouling to deal with. 777 seems to be the worst as the fouling is pretty difficult to remove.
