has anyone rebarreled a Yugo M48 to 35 whelen?
« on: October 15, 2004, 08:01:16 AM »
i have a nice action sitting here just begging for a barrel and I've been looking hard at the .35 cal stuff. I just don't know if this cal will work with the medium action M48.  I did try putting some .30-06 rounds in the magwell and they fed alright (wouldn't chamber of course.) but looks like I'll need to extend the front of the magwell to accomadate the longer rounds. I already have two 8mms and want to go with a bigger bore sporter and it looks like the whelen takes over where the mauser peaks at looks like a good choice if it'll work. Thanks 8)

That should be doable although the longer 30-06 case will definitley want  the magzine box extended a bit, as you already noted.  The 35 Whelan is about the largest caliber for that case that will still allow a reasonable should to headspace on..  It seems a very efficient caliber that kills well...  In the 98 that would make a very efficient killer for animals up to elk or so...  The magazine extension would be the biggest problem with a small possibility that the feed rails will have to be worked on..  Since you already tried them they should work OK..

Thanks, I think it'll all be ok, I know I can get a good barrel for it and the mag well is milled steel seems like I could cut the front out and just reweld it about .250" longer, everything would fit then. Sounds like good fun to me. 8)

Simply bend a section of steel the right height and thickness into the 'U' shape of the front of the mag box.  Cut the sides to be about .250 long and remove the front of the existing box.  I MIG welf them in place although they can be lapped and soldered(or brazed).  Good luck!
