Hi
I just bought a used contender. It has a LOBO scope. I found some "stuff" under the mount. Is this epoxy? Should the mount be epoxied to the barrel? Is the lobo scope good or bad?

Whadda ya mean Stuff? I generally just put a thin film of oil under my scope mounts to prevent rust. I have found all kinds of crap under them though, leaves, beer cans (shims) epoxy ect. Never heard of a Lobo scope. What caliber did ya buy? If it's a heavy recoiler you will want to make sure that mount is good and secure. If it's a cheezy mount just toss it and get a decent one. You'll just aggravate yourself with a crappy mount and scope for that matter. If it's a decent mount it will fit the bbl nice and even. If you have to use fillers and glue to keep it from wobbling well......

The Lobo scope made by T/C was similar or even the same as the Bushnell rail mount handgun scope. You probably have Loc-Tite under your rail mount base which isn't uncommon and no, DON'T throw that base away. T/C made quality 1" tube rail mount scopes that are compatable with that base and you're thrownig away $10 at least. The lobo scope is a much smaller tube and gathers little light. The lenses are pretty poor and it was a low end scope to begin with so no, it's no prize. Depending on the caliber, you might be served well by the scope but there are definately better ones out there.

Thanks for the info. The cal is .357 mag. The scope came with it and I will use it for awhile so I can get shooting.

I know that Bob Milek used to recommend epoxying the scope base to the barrel in his old articles.

There is a practice of using epoxy to create near 100% contact between the scope rings and the scope. I have never tried it, but it entails putting a release agent on the scope and using epoxy to create a mold on the bottom ring for the scope to sit in. Kind of like what the Burris signature rings do. The only other time I know of using epoxy is when you mount the base on the barrel. Some shooters do this when mounting on a heavy hitter like a 454 or 30.06 barrel.
